I loved the 60s clothes and hairdos last night. That was my era and style.

Nah, that's not where I know her from. Don't watch EE.
I think she may have been the lead role in Widows many moons ago.

It was a shocker but I wasn't sure how the midwife would not have had a clue. Surely people would have said things to her. People can't resist having a dig.

Cora the abortionist. No wonder she has been away from EE rather than battling for little Abi. So was she supposed to be the butcher abortionist from the other week? I didn't like the way she bundled up the newspaper, "bedding" and.pillow and put them under the bed. It made me wonder if they would be reused!!
I was really surprised by this twist though, I just thought her boil had burst. (Oh Cora, what a putrid storyline!)
She was the lead in Widows years ago and I believe has a cameo in the new film version.

Given what was said about the particular infection that was causing her boils being very dangerous for pregnant women, I thought that it must have been a pointer to her being responsible for the death of the girl who had an abortion a few weeks ago. Does that make her guilty of murder or manslaughter? If it was murder, in 1964 she could have been give the death penalty. That was the year the last execution took place.

I think she could get manslaughter for murder you need to prove malice aforethought, but it was about 8-10 years for carrying out abortions and people were hung for it, but not at this time that I know of. I think they possibly stopped doing that in Victorian times. It was unusual that they called the midwife, they normally bundled the woman up and out of their premises and left them by a bus stop or phone box and called anonymously. Sometimes they had a relative or friend with them. Nobody knows how many abortionists operated, because they operated across all classes.
And of course there were some very unsympathetic gynaecologists that would perform a hysterectomy regardless of whether it was necessary. They would see it as a just punishment and one thing those midwives would've known is which ones took a more sympathetic view. I was once involved in a history project where we interviewed people that had either had a back street abortion or the adult children and husbands of women who had been seriously disabled, died or were committed. For many it was a very painful but cathartic project. And we were regularly given the names of two long dead midwives who had carried out abortions.

I thought t all seemed a bit rushed last night with too much being packed in....anyone else agree? I did laugh at the Nurse Crane/Sergeant Wolfe/Miss Higgins storyline though....that poem and Phyllis's face when she read it!
