What was Big Centre TV has been rebranded into Made In Birmingham. I don't know if this has happened in other areas. And it is 70% badly made crap but everynow and again it comes up with a gem. Like Streets of Birmingham. It's two blokes in a car, the passenger being a local historian. And they drive up and down streets talking about the history of the buildings. They often get out and have a poke about and tell you all kinds of interesting stuff. Now I know a fair amount about my city cos I've always found it interesting but there was stuff on there I didn't know. Which is what I love about this kind of thing. And it's very simple. There's barely any BGM. It looks like it cost a fiver to make, besides the petrol, but I would take this over Dan Snow's latest expensive nonsense any day. And then we have the other side of the coin...... I'm now watching You're the Ref. Which is a football discussion programme, mainly on ref's decision in games at the weekend. Only....... Sky own the games so Gary Megson and the retired head of the Ref's Association are discussing decisions we can't see unless we watch the game on Sky cos MiB can't afford to pay for the clips....... yeah... bit odd!

I saw this last week. There was nothing on so was flicking through the channels and there were two men in a Morgan (I don't know if the vehicle changes each episode cause another time they were in a 4x4) driving round the streets of Bham including, I think, by Aston Villa FC. It reminds me of those BBC4 shows where it's just a journey on a train or a barge. It's oddly relaxing (and informative) and nice to just drive around without leaving the house.lol

Saw that one! They went from Aston through Newtown and into the Jewellery Quarter.

That was it. There's no on now but I think it's Streets Of The Black Country, that's in a 4x4! It's the same show just different location. Is it just Black Country and Bham? They should do one going in and around the Midlands and visit some museums and villages for the summer. I'm sure museums like Ironbridge, Severn Valley Railway etc would welcome it because it's some free advertising.

It's so sad, but there's something exciting about seeing somewhere you've been on tv! I suppose it's like when a comedian says "anyone from Derby" and people whoop because there's a recognition, especially when tv in very London centric.

I've only seen Birmingham so far. I've got the Black Country one recorded to watch tomorrow. Hopefully they will do some more. I'd like to see places I don't know very well.
So far I've seen Northfield to Selly Oak, and Aston to the JQ. The next Brum one will be Five Ways to the Hall of Memory. That one should be very good cos it's changed a lot just in my lifetime.

The channel, in London, is called London Live. The "Made In..." channel is, currently, limited to Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, and Tyneside. I think they partner up with Trinity Mirror - or local titles from there - to deliver the programmes. Similarly London Live is operated by Lebedev Holdings which owns the Evening Standard and Independent titles...many "on location" videos embedded into Evening Standard online articles come from London Live.
London Live was very ropy at the beginning, but is getting better. It was mostly filled with very wooden news programmes set among very old B&W films and low rent, London based gangster films that represent the high point of the careers of Ray Winstone and Danny Dyer (and have kept Dexter Fletcher in work forever). They are putting out quite a lot of original programmes now. Hit and miss, but then so was Dave's original programming, early on, but that has come good.

It has improved on Big Centre TV, which did have a lot of ropey interviews and chat shows. But it did have a few gems in the dross like the local music shows. I miss those as they don't seem to be on MiB

The Black Country was interesting. I didn't know about all the glassworks in Lye.

I've been past the glass cone but I didn't know there were row upon row of them. The historian in the car is very enthusiastic.

Just seen another episode (Summerfield Park to Colmore Row via the Jewellery Quarter) but it was a different historian, I think I prefer the other guy I find him clearer to understand. I liked this journey as the architecture is lovely, some of the buildings in the financial part are beautiful, I like those red brick buildings. A couple of years ago Birmingham had a thing called The Big Hoot where there were lots of owls with different designs placed around the city and a few further afield and you could get a map and Mark them off. I knew nothing about it until I got into Birmingham and once I'd found one I wanted more and more (my mild OCD kicking in) but it was great fun, I walked from the children's hospital to Digbeth and The Bull Ring to Centenary Sq to find as many as I could. I even went in the bull ring church which Ive never been in. It was a great and fun way of having a look around the city (even if, I think, it was meant for kids and families!) I hope they do something similar. thebighoot.co.uk/trail/

I remember that! They also did one the year before with Gromits.

I didnt hear about the gromit ones. The owls were 2015 according to the website but I don't remember anything for 2016. The owls had some great designs and because of the shape were easy to place anywhere including 'little hoots' (small owls) in shop windows and The church. I'd love for them to do it again, like I said a fun way of moving around the city. I must have walked miles including places I've never been before and you could also see other people searching them out. Great fun...and free!

I've confused you, the Grommits were in Bristol. But the Evening Mail did a big feature on them and that's why I remember them. I swear I saw on outside St Phil's but I must be misremembering.

Oh right, that makes sense cause Aardman Animations in based in Bristol☺ I think these type of things pop up in lots of cities. I'm sure Manchesters probably had something and Liverpool of different animals. I liked the owls though, maybe it's the symmetry of them. Lol
