Apart from the singing, the blackbirds have planted a lot of the shrubs, including Cotoneaster trees, in our garden. Unfortunately the miner birds gang up and chase them away.

My bird watching window of my flat has a variety of trees mainly a mixture of Rowans and each autumn it's interesting to see which birds attack the differing varieties of berries, usually it's the blackbirds who strip them but this morning was intrigued by 2 walkers with very fancy cameras taking 100,s of pics of a flock of starlings stripping a different tree then flying of to a nearby very high sycamore then back to continue , the walkers must have stayed for at least 40 mins, the ground below the tree is red with the fallen berries this year, untouched

Think they live all over the place ! I love watching them when they swarm in their millions, never seen that in real life though just on TV or possibly on Utube. For 3 years I had nests in under my garage roof.....what a mess they left each year until the entrance was blocked. I don't think they are the most attractive of birds until you see their coloured feathers close-up in the sunshine

Starlings are spectacular when they swarm, I saw it once on the Norfolk coast. It is something I will never forget, I just stood there gaping at them. I love watching them in the garden, they are so funny the way they argue over scraps when there is plenty to go round.

I have bought two bird baths today, as the first one has a little feeding platform above the water dish - then I realised the poor woodpigeons, who visit quite frequently, wouldn't be able to have a good splash! Be interesting to see what the smaller birds go for, if they use the feeding platform. (I get a bit confused as to what to actually put out, as there is such a range. Previously have hung fat balls on a tree, probably do that too.)

What birds do you get ?
Years ago walking to work in the early morning I would cross a very large piece of waste land which used to be a steel works.Sometimes I would disturb larks and they would fly up and start singing. It was quite magical. It has been built on now of course and all you hear is the sound of traffic.

I get lots and lots of LBJs. The odd wood pigeon and yesterday a magpie. Which hung around for a bit but all the little birds had gone.
I did come out one morning to find pigeon feathers thrown about but whether it was a fox or a buzzard, I don't know.
I was watching a raven today. It was standing in a patch of sunshine. First time I realised you can get shades of black.

I've got two fat ball feeders and the birds fight over them like no-one's business. Lots of flapping and pecking! And often a queue of birds on the tree branches awaiting their turn.
And I love the way they wipe their beaks against the branches when they are finished.

Little brown jobs. Australian magpies are very different from those in the UK
