Do female bullfinches have the creamy-pinky-beige chest that the males do? If so, I think I have one in the garden. Haven't seen a male though.
Most of the birds in my yard are LBJs so it makes identification difficult!

It is a female then. I shall have to keep an eye out for a male. Would be nice to have them breeding in my garden.

Oh wow, I've never seen a black cockatoo! They are indeginous to Australia, aren't they?

I envy you Miranda, not seen a bullfinch of any kind for many years.I get a really good variety of birds though and all are welcome, apart from the heron.

T'is for the heron! I bet he loves you lots for that buffet. I'm only kidding. Have you got the pond netted?

No it's not netted, rather difficult to net a pond of that size and type but we've only ever lost one to the heron since we built the new pond, it's the most amazing looking bird close up though, sort of prehistoric.

We have birds in our garden that would be considered quite exotic in the UK but there's nothing better than the sound of a blackbird singing in this spring morning.

And in our previous house, I used to leave the back door open as evening approached, because a blackbird sat on the roof of the bungalow next door and sang his little heart out every day. It was so beautiful, it became my favourite birdsong.

I love your garden, Hollybeau! Our main attraction for the birds is our birdbath (sadly broken by a too-heavy pear from one of our trees, must get another one). The woodpigeons are quite entertaining, they look right at you if it's in need of topping up, as if to say, well come on then! Mainly it's blackbirds too (they do have a lovely song). The woodpigeons make a distinctive call, sounds like "The Wall Street Shuffle".
