They may just be being cautious, they can take a while to get used to a new item in the garden.

What small bird has a thin white strip down each side of its tail? I can't see it clearly as the sun has gone in and it's getting dark.

Could be!
Actually I've just looked up and it's on the feeder this very second! There's two of them. Maybe a pair? Are the females brown?

I've got a pair of collared doves in the garden! They are so elegant looking. Especially when compared to the wood pigeon that is pecking next to them.

One of the doves is now high in the tree trying to work out how to get onto the fat ball feeder. The LBJs are not happy about it and are telling him in no uncertain terms!

I've got fledglings! Two little LBJs sat on the branch while their mom is going backwards and forwards from the feeders, showing them how to do it! I'm ridiculously excited! One is sitting peeping and vibrating his wings. Go on, little un, fly!
ETA: they flew!

I've got absolutely loads of birds on my feeders today. They must be struggling to find insects in all this rain and wind.

I've got absolutely loads of birds on my feeders today. They must be struggling to find insects in all this rain and wind. I am so jealous! We moved from a country garden, birds all day, from 3am in the summer. And a pet pheasant, Percy, who used to wake us up at 5am! Here we had a sterile back yard. Planted up, we get birds in the breeding season, and flying rats, (wood pigeons) I would love to plant trees, but we rent , so we won't see them grow. I do miss a proper garden.

Oh you must do! Hopefully you will get more and more wildlife as the garden develops. I would really miss my trees.

My birds are back! All my LBJs have suddenly made an appearance this morning. They checked out the feeders (empty!) and are presently feasting on the blackberries in the hedge. So nice to see them again!

We get whole days where there are hardly any birds at all on our feeders. We think it's because a sparrowhawk appears, they're deadly killers. The other birds either lay low or go to somewhere else until they think the danger's passed.

We have started going to the North Cave Wetlands, and Tophill Lowe nature reserve. (Courtesy of my son and DDDIL who are avid twitchers.) We have been treated to monoculars by them. Everyone is very friendly. Alot have obviously very expensive equipment, (huge lenses) and post the most wonderful photos on their facebook pages. It is a really peaceful hobby, only disturbed by the occasional RAF plane. Loads of dragonflys.

I've got fledgings! Yaaaahhh! One just popped out of the elder hedge and was squawking its little head off.
