Dear oh dear! June was so close yet so far! I assume she stayed to find Hannah but I don't think that will be easy as an underground group of one. She also didn't actually tell Emily to take the baby to her husband or to give him any news of her so he may be none the wiser.
I was sorry Aunt Lydia.was, presumably, killed as although she was a vile character, I did think the actress did a good job. And bloody Fred showed his true colours didn't he with his diatribe against women. Serena must be wishing she had taken up that underground chap's offer of a trip to Hawaii after losing both her baby and her finger last night. I assume that will be all we ever see of Josh from The West Wing, but I liked him and he came good for Emily, both with her escape and refusing to have sex with her. Maybe he will be back as the Head of the Resistance! We didn't get to see how any of the escape was organised after all. I would like that to be explored next time rather than being based in another suffocating household.

Yes, I assumed June stayed behind to get Hannah somehow. She was racked with guilt at the thought of abandoning her earlier in the series, when she was trying to get out of Gilead - and now is probably just as determined that Hannah won't be brought up there as she was that Holly/Nicole wouldn't be.
However I think we're going to see a lot more of Commander Lawrence ('Josh' - though I didn't watch The West Wing and don't know him from that). I can't believe they've written in this apparent renegade to the regime right near the end of the series, only to have him disappear again in series 3. He was said to have been the one to come up with the idea of The Colonies - if true, he must have had a change of heart.
I have a suspicion Aunt Lydia isn't dead. I shouldn't be at all surprised if she survives - and if so, also with a change of heart.

One scene really touched me was June showing Nick the baby and saying something like "Here's your Daddy" Very moving.
I was surprised when Nick stopped Fred from going out and actually physically put a hand on his shoulder/chest. Of course Nick is still an Eye so probably has more power than we know.

Excellent episode last night. You've all reached the same conclusion I did (thank goodness!) I also think Aunt Lydia may not be dead - we didn't actually see her looking lifeless.

I found the ending powerful but disappointing. It was inevitable, given that Elisabeth Moss is an executive producer on the show, that she was never going to disappear, but I'd have preferred to see her getting out and becoming an underground member, perhaps moving in and out of Gilead or using her inside knowledge to advise on its weak points while being reunited with Luke and Moira. As it is, what is she going to do? She surely can't go back to the Waterford household where all that can realistically await her is execution for herself and probably Serena and Rita, and all the other Marthas who helped.
I agree it's unlikely that Aunt Lydia is dead. I hope not, she's such a great actress and character. We never got to hear her back story other than that she felt responsible for the death of a child, so there is unfinished business there for the show. We may see Emily again – once she's in Canada she will go through the same process as Moira did and is sure to meet Luke once it's known that Nicole/Holly is June's daughter. And I also agree that Commander Lawrence is too interesting and important a character to disappear at this point.
I hope they don't drag this show out for season after season as was done with Homeland, for example. They just about got away with it this series but I'd hope that the next one is the final one. I'd like to see the fall of Gilead in the next series and horrible Fred get his comeuppance.

Promising start to the new series. I liked the symbolism of Serena setting fire to the marital bed, the scene of so much unhappiness and ceremonial rape. Also June's inevitable punishment taking place off screen - it seems the programme makers have paid attention to viewers' feedback.
I did however find it hard to believe that June would not immediately be executed. Or that a new baby would survive a dunking in a fast flowing river, or even that Emily would, weighed down by her clothes and boots. Why do they do this?
Never mind, it's back, as scenically beautiful as ever and no doubt June and her new commander will set sparks off against each other.

I thought she would be up on that wall! But Fred lied didn't he, and said that June and Serena had tried to stop Emily. I was amazed that baby didn't die. I was rather surprised the final leg of the trip was to swim across the river with no help! Now come on, Josh from The West Wing! Let's get some insurgency started.

Yes, I was a bit incredulous that they wouldn't both drown or die of hypothermia. It was a good first episode though.
As a non-watcher of The West Wing, I had to look up who that is.
Just to get my own back - good to see Sarah Pfefferman from 'Transparent' in a cameo appearance.
