That's the one! The crime family had a brutal father who died at the start. I really felt for the NA guy at the end. Yes thats right! That is how the woman came to be head of the Fargo mob. She was the widow of the brutal dad and took over as boss when he died. There were sons but they were young or incompetent or something. The Kansas City mob figured she would be weak (they were wrong) and they could come in and easily take over. So you are probably 100% correct that the new series will be a prequel explaining the connection between the Kansas City and Fargo crime families.

Jessie Buckley is a little star. She first came to prominence as runner up in the Andrew Lloyd Webber reality audition show to win the leading role in a new stage version of Oliver! She didn't win but has gone on to do great things in straight drama, such as War and Peace, and also a film which I haven't seen but which had good reviews, Wild Rose, in which she played a Glaswegian country singer. No spoilers but 4 episodes in an Jessie Buckley is the star of this series for me. She absolutely steals every scene she is in as the mysterious Nurse Mayflower. And that means she is stealing scenes from some pretty A-list actors. Chris Rock is amazing as well. Its really different seeing him in a hard dramatic role.

6 episodes in and I am REALLY enjoying this series of Fargo. The best so far IMO.
Fair warning, its pretty dark. Not as much black humor as in the film or three other series. The tone is more serious. Maybe its the more urban setting of Kansas City as opposed to the homespun small town rural setting of the others.
Not that Kansas City is New York mind, but compared to Bemidji or Eden Prairie...

I've seen her in quite a lot of things - War and Peace, Taboo, the film Beast, The Last Post (axed after one season), The Woman in White, the film Wild Rose (currently included with Amazon Prime, at least in the UK), Chernobyl, the film Judy - but until she was on The Graham Norton show a week ago I didn't even realise she is Irish, so she must be really good at accents! Her natural voice is strongly Irish - and she also comes over as rather shy and quiet, quite a difference from her on-screen presence. I've never watched Fargo (shock, horror!). If I start with season 4, will it matter that haven't seen the earlier ones?

I commented on another thread that Irish (and Antipodean) actors are usually the most successful at adopting other accents. I'm sure there are many linguistic theories about why that might be, but the fact that both have historically tended to emigrate to other countries for work and/or a new life may be significant.
As for Fargo, I haven't seen the new series yet but the previous three are loosely linked in that there is a continuing thread but you could regard each as a standalone as they tell separate stories and have different casts (some related or connected in some way to others from earlier series). So you'd get more out of it, but they are so good I wouldn't let it put you off if you don't have a way of catching up.

Thanks GHS. Haven't checked yet but I think S1-3 are on Netflix - though the problem I'd have at the moment would be finding time to watch them.
I will watch S4 if and when it arrives in the UK. As far as I know, C4 haven't even confirmed that they will show S4 at all, let alone when.

Hi Geo
Series 4 is a prequel to S1-3 and the film.
So it makes a perfect entry point to the world of Fargo.
If you enjoy it, you can watch the other series and look for the connections as flash forwards rather than flashbacks.

The final episode of series 4 has aired.
It was easily my favorite of the four series.
It was so well told, the cinematography was sublime. Feature film quality. Sometimes there were three way split screens with concurrent action taking place in each but it was never hard to follow. Just made you appreciate the care that went into every shot. Every edit.
The acting from the main leads and all the support players was great and very balanced. The attention to detail in the sets, the cars, the clothes for the 1950s was spot on as well. The soundtrack reminded me a lot of "O Brother Where Art Thou" with lots of Southern folk, country and gospel. Being set in Missouri more Ozarks in style than Appalachian.
I'm sure you will enjoy it when it comes your way and ill look forward to discussing it more in depth with you then.
The only word of warning is the same thing i said earlier; it is very dark. Not darkly lit, the mood, the themes are very dark. It doesn't have much of the humor and whimsy of the film or the other series. It plays it pretty serious and straightforward most of the time. Reminiscent of the Godfather at times. People sat and had discussions. Meetings. They didn't shout or threaten. It was business. Not personal.
5 out of 5 stars. TV at its best.

A great start. Loved the 'potted history' of the crime syndicates. I wouldn't want that nurse looking after me,though. Should be another good series.

I had forgotten this started last night. Is there a repeat, I wonder? Otherwise I'll have to brave the catch-up service.

Ben Wishaw has a really bad Irish accent in this. I wish actors wouldn't attempt accents they can't do, it really knocks me out of the story when it's an accent I know. His is a proper 'kiss me, I'm Oirish' effort.
Other than that, I've really enjoyed the first one. The history lesson at the start was very good. And there's several strands already. I shall binge a few today, I think.
