Two films starring Sean Connery, showing there's a lot more to him than James Bond:
Five Days One Summer, about a 1920s climbing tragedy in the Alps, with a twist. The actual story is rather slight, but the climbing scenes, with 1920s equipment and clothing, are terrific and beautifully filmed.
The Offence, based on a play so largely uses one set, in which Connery is a police detective who so brutally interrogates a suspect, played by Ian Bannen, that the suspect dies. That's the starting point for the film which then covers the investigation into the death in custody and reveals in a series of flashbacks how they got to that point. Mainly black and white, but there are scenes of Connery's imagination which are in colour.
My favourite film is Local Hero which is a lot of people's favourite so hardly an undiscovered pleasure, but quite old now (1984) so may not be known to younger readers. It's about a possible oil boom in Scotland and its effects on the local community, but it's really a little piece of magic about human frailty and kindness and is a delight from start to finish. Peter Capaldi's first film role but also features Burt Lancaster in one of his last roles.

Kingsman is just fantastic, violent, sweary fun. The denouement is fantastic. I've got one: The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Why isn't this a franchise? This could easily be the new Bond. It's got great actors, amazing and interesting characters, and the style is unique in film. So so enjoyable! Interesting. I've tried watching Kingsman three times and I just can't get on with it. I don't know why. There's nothing about it that I particularly dislike. Weird. The Man from UNCLE, on the other hand, I enjoyed immensely despite not expecting to.

This is recommending a channel. For those devoted fans of truly bad, awful movies, (such as myself) Movies4Men has a selection of crackers! There are some with slightly out of sync dubbing, some with arguably some of the worst acting ever immortalized on film, some with heroines who are a throw-back to the Hammer Films school of acting. As it's supposed to be all action stuff, there are some classics such as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes from Outer Space, and Attack of the Giant Frogs missing, but it's really worth an occasional dip into what's on to sometimes find something unmissable.

If you want bad films, nothing beats the SyFy channel - which has proudly shown all four Sharknado filns, and frequently features such gems as 2 Lava 2 Lantula, Big Ass Spider, Sharktopus, Piranhaconda, Mega Python v Gataroid, as well as the worst special effects ever in disaster movies such as Ice Twisters, Mega Fault, and Post Impact en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sci_Fi_Pictures_original_films

That channel looks great fun, cricket. Unfortunately I don't get the channel. Those titles make a true bad movies aficionado's mouth water! Particularly like the sound of Mongolian Death Worm.

Dark Places starring Charlize Theron and Christina Hendricks {took a while to work out it was her}
Watched this for the first time, a couple of days ago on SKY Cinema - maybe low scores on imdb and rotten tomatoes but I really enjoyed it.
A woman (Charlize Theron) confronts traumatic, childhood memories of the murder of her mother and two sisters when she investigates the possibility that her brother (Corey Stoll) is innocent of the crime.

Another good film, doing the rounds on SKY Cinema, which I missed at the real cinema - Three Lauches and a Daughter......I, I, I mean Steve Jobs - Fassbender & Winslet on top form and I was an emotional wreck by the end, what's that all about.

As a new subscriber to Sky Cinema, I am quite enjoying Kingsman. Also great to be able to watch some old favourites, eg Dangerous Liasons - just wow at the acting, costumes, cinematography etc, plus entertaining, and all in lovely HD!

The classic wickerman is on CBS this weekend Fantastic film. What is CBS? Does anyone remember Channel 4 film nights, with the Stella Artois sponsorship/advertising? Often late on a Sunday night, a bit inconveniently, but they showed a lot of good films then, and definitely The Wicker Man would have been one.

The classic wickerman is on CBS this weekend Brilliant film but I could never watch it again, found the end quite disturbing. The Witchfinder General is another one.
