He said he'd been on the whiskey didn't he? Two different cases, Cake. The kneecap belonged to the young fella they found on the street. But yeah, the old guy had been drinking whiskey. Dread to think what his sons have been through to feel the way they did about him. A lot, Miranda. It doesn't happen overnight. Had a friend who was married to a really nice fella but when he started drinking too much, years into their marriage they were constantly in fear he might have an accident and kill someone. He didn't kill someone but drove 3 cars to smithereens. Alcoholism is terrible.

Did we have a weekly sob story from the paramedics in the last series? I don't mean to be horrible and Lockerbie must have been a terrible experience. But I'm interested in what is going on as I'm watching.
It's starting to feel a bit of a set-up now.

I don't get that vibe, Miranda.
It seems to me more of a BBC mission to try to fix something that seems to be broken ie ambulance blocking. Which is good and proper. We hear about it, but really can't appreciate impact till we see it for real.

Oh no, I get that bit. And I would prefer them to do more of that. People need to see what is happening to the NHS. And 15 ambulances queing outside a hospital to take sick people in tells its own story.
It's the other bits that are beginning to annoy me.

Another catalogue of events last night,Amy at 100 happy in a care home after 3 ambulance visits in one week,David with motor neurone who seemed so happy, but sadly died after filming, the opening incident which did not have the positive outcome that was expected, exploding eggs, an attempted suicide and someone close to drinking himself to death.
Hats off,yet again to all involved ,the so professional staff at all levels and the patients who let their stories be told.

I have always said that paramedics were born not made. I never met a bad one in 37years in the NHS. I would struggle to have sympathy with some of the patients they have to deal with, and have nothing but admiration for them. I don't think that I could cope mentally with a role in the telephone response either.

I admire them hugely too.
100 year old lady, looked heaps better after admitted in the care home.
Patients with mental problems, very difficult to deal with. The fella who was once in a dark place himself, turned his life around luckily and seemed to really care about these patients. Brave of him to talk about it.

When I started my training, (physio) in 1969, we were told on our first day, that anyone over 65, would not be rescusitated unless they had dependants.

When I was still working till 2004, it was important to have the ICU beds occupied because that brought in a lot of money for the hospital. Of the 7 or 8 patients the average age was sometimes 95. Of some, the cardiologist said: the heart muscle is completely worn out, we'll pump in meds and then when a more urgent case comes in, we'll transfer them to the geriatric ward. Often these people died anyway, their life prolonged for 2-3 weeks at huge costs. I think these days, most older folk, over here, have a care plan. Certainly those in a care home. I have seen on more than one occasion on mother's floor a person with a baxter with "pain relief". As a nurse and being there every evening, I see what's going on, without actually seeing.

Bloody hell.
I remember that crash last Xmas. It happened not far from where I live. One stupid bloke killed 6 people.
It was amazing to watch all the crews work. Organised chaos. Bloody disgusting though that the sat nav was knackered. Shows how much pressure they are under that they can't take the rigs off the road for repairs.

It looked awful. That poor young paramedic lass seemed very traumatised. Only 21. Did a grand job though.

I think she'll be a good paramedic. She held herself together very well at the time and only fell apart afterwards. And was still able to go back out and show care and compassion to another patient.

Miranda, it was more organised than chaos, I think they dealt with it very well , so many victims involved, where to start.
The young girl and Marek did very well, nothing more they could have done. Those who answer the 999 calls also have a stressful job, and then to be yelled at: bitch etc..........not what they need and yet they keep calm and get on with it.
