I just realised that when I skimmed through my now-deleted recording of the Opening Ceremony or was out of the room, I managed to miss Dame Judi. I cannot find a clip on line so how was she? Marvellous as usual?

She was narrating the last bit about the Athlete's forest. She didn't actually appear. And yes she was wonderful as always.

She read out a poem called 'A Flor e a Nausea (Flower and Nausea)' by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, about flower growing in a heavily polluted city. I have just read the opening ceremony only cost 3 million. (Ours cost 27 million) Brazil did well.

I am really annoyed with my PVR! I taped the weightifting from last night. Got to the last lift that she had to complete to get the gold medal. One attempt left. Watched her walk out, chewing my nails it was so tense. And then suddenly I'm watching Nile Wilson swing around a high bar...... I hate when it cuts off early!

Well I thought the timing on the RB coverage went completely skew-whiff last night. I tuned into a few of the channels and something else was on. I think that is just a vagary of the RBs, I am sure they went a bit off schedule last time too.
Thank you for the Dame Judi update. I thought she was going to be there!
I read a column in the Observer today saying that it cost £5million. The budget was ever-declining and they ended up buying stuff in charity shops etc to get it all done. I thought it was pretty good myself and well done to them for not spending even more. But TBH does it need a £50million budget to have a good time? Sometimes less really is more. Just get the dancing going and some fireworks! The bit I find a bit ridiculous is all that faffing around with the flags and swearing various oaths.
I am glad they decided to abandon the bit where the super-model got mugged! Apparently the locals went mad when they heard this was included as a representation of contemporary Rio.

I think whoever organised the OC deserves a very big pat on the back for doing that for so little money.

I missed Mitch Fenner's voice on the commentary for the gymnastics so looked him up to see why he wasn't doing it. Sadly he died just last month. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/gymnastics/36704311 Perhaps it was mentioned and I missed it.

I didn't know he'd died! I knew he'd retired from commentating due to ill-health but not that he'd died.
Oh that's a shame. I've grown up with him being the voice of gymnastics.

Same here. Mitch was always so knowlegeable. He apparently guided the Dutch gymnastics team to qualification for Rio. They are, quite rightly extremely sad. Still it's his lasting legacy.
On a lighter note - well done Kyle Edmund for reaching the second round of the tennis. Rafa, Djockers, both Murrays and Konta in action today.
Watching the women's gymnastics at the mo. both Jamaica and Republic of Ireland have first time qualifiers. Well done to them. The oldest competitor is 41 and first competed at Barcelona in '92. The Chinese gymnasts look rather young and under developed. A bit like the bad old days of the Eastern bloc countries.

Just watched the 41 year old on beam! Bravo, that woman. I agree about how tiny the Chinese gymnasts are. Nice to see some of the mixed group gymnasts as well rather than the usual teams.
I am liking the Belgian team..... - hope that isn't the kiss of death. I think the ones I have seen have been very elegant.
What a pity about poor Mitch Fenner.

Yes - 70 is no age these days. Dreaded cancer apparently.

Getting frustrated with the coverage on Virgin. Eight RB channels available, some not showing the sport it should be, judo on two channels, nothing on RB 8. Tennis in session and nowhere to be seen on any of the channels. Not good.

Now does anyone else find it quite ridiculous that the coaches are allowed up to the asymmetric bars these days? The Chinese guy was practically underneath it! Sometimes the gymnasts nearly hit them, which I think is a disqualification?
What a shame for that poor Australian. She was so graceful and tumbling well, then fell over. I did like the Turkish girl on the beam as well. I prefer to see that style to the tiny gymnasts who have more pizzazz but far less grace.

At the moment I have 602 boxing, 603 dressage, 604 gym, 605 judo, 606 shooting, 607 rugby, 608 beach volleyball.
