The Bletchley Circle followed a group of women who worked as codebreakers at Bletchley Park during the second world war and, having now returned to civilian life, find themselves investigating murder cases which have the police stymied. Two series aired on ITV between 2012 and 2014.
The spin-off series, San Francisco, is set in 1956, three years after the events of the original series. Jean and Millie depart London for San Francisco to investigate the murder of a close friend. There they are joined by North American code-breakers Iris and Hailey who, like their British counterparts, find themselves undervalued and overlooked despite their indispensable contributions to the war effort. With renewed purpose, the code-breaking team will stay in San Francisco and continue to solve mysteries together in the Bay Area.
Original series stars Julie Graham (Doc Martin) and Rachael Stirling (Churchill’s Secret) are reprising their roles as Jean and Millie. They are joined in the main cast by Crystal Balint (Prison Break), Chanelle Peloso (Incredible Crew), Jennifer Spence (You Me Her) and Ben Cotton (The X-Files).
Set to premiere later this month.

Thanks DBC, I wasn't aware of this.
I liked The Bletchley Circle, and my first reaction to what I presumed would be another crude US development of a British original was negative. But wait! - despite the San Francisco setting this is a UK-Canada co-production and most of the cast is Canadian, which for me makes it a lot more interesting.

and not forgetting New Orleans!
I did like this series and wondered why ITV hadn't decommissioned it. It does seem to be quite standard nowadays to make a series and then tout it around the other makers to see if anyone wants to pick it up. The same has happened with The Last Kingdom, and it did with Ripper Street.

I watched last night and found it interesting enough to continue with it.
It will require a lot of careful balancing, if they’re going to integrate the murder plot with the developing Civil Rights Movement, the lingering effect of Japanese internment AND the usual sexism of the time. Tricky.

Why don't they call it Bletchley Circle: Canada. That's where it is filmed.

Had to watch this in two halves, but is good enough to stick with.
That is 2 good dramas from ITV in the middle of Summer.

I didn't really take to this so won't bother with the rest. Maybe it's the heat!

We tried but it just didn’t grab us, I found it difficult to hear and there’s nothing wrong with my hearing, I find Rachel Stirling’s voice very monotonous at the best of times. Shan’t watch any more.

Not quite as good as the UK based one, mainly I think because they are trying to fit in too many angles and it was slightly preposterous that they could just up and go to SF etc.

It isn't as good as the originals, is it - well, not yet anyway. Very convenient that the SF paper would publish a photo and enough details of the latest murder for them to recognise it was connected to that of their colleague 14 years earlier, and pretty unlikely that they would instantly up sticks and sail off to investigate.
However, now that they're there I've some interest in finding out who's doing the killings and why and how they select the victims, so I'll stick with it.

Well that was a weak effort.
