Again, much to my surprise, I very much enjoyed the use of modern music and dialogue. For me, the only jarring anachronism came right at the beginning with that (very beautiful) fairground ride....lit up like a Christmas tree by electric lights! During the Napoleonic War???

Yes, that's an odd one. Actually, the whole carousel is anachronistic if we're going to be pedantic; the first steam-driven merry-go-round wasn't invented until 1861, and the book was written in 1848 (and, obviously, set even earlier).

It didn’t matter,it summed up the premise of the story perfectly.

It didn’t matter,it summed up the premise of the story perfectly. Yes, I agree. Having watched the second episode, I think it is great fun and I really don't care now about any anachronisms, I'm just enjoying it for what it is. For once, something seems to be living up to all the hype that has preceded it.

But... in that opening scene Michael Palin is meant to be W M Thackeray himself introducing the story which he wrote when still in his 30s, but he looks an age which suggests that at that point he's approaching the end of his life, so it could be up to 1863.
The same actors we see in the production are riding horses on the carousel, which I can just about get my head round, but I can't defend electric lights. Even the 1860s would be far too early for those.

The appearance of the carousel made me do a double take, too. So wrong for the period.... But they made a big effort to show what went on in the pleasuregrounds of the popular Vauxhall.
Enjoying this, looking forward to the rest of it.

It reminded of a quote in George McDonald Fraser's The Pyrates, in which he alleges that young ladies used to classify young men as 'NSV', 'NSS' or 'NSA' (Not Safe at Vauxhall, Not Safe in a Sedan, Not Safe Anywhere)!

I remember years ago seeing Susan Hampshire playing Becky Sharp in this on TV. Just googled it and it was in 1967. Can’t remember the story much apart from Susan Hampshire being very good . I always did think she played period parts very well. The other thing I remember about it was there were lots of good looking soldiers in it . I was just a teenager then though!

According to IMDB, women have given an average rating of 8.0, which is very good, but males have given a very poor rating of 5.4!

It feels like more of a woman’s thing to me.

Oh dear, after being very ambivalent about it, the second episode now has me firmly hooked! But for some reason I'm finding the army uniforms not very flattering to the men,OH said they looked as if they'd been made on a small budget.
