This is an interesting one. ITV has ordered Wild Bill, a six episode police drama about a US cop who comes to the UK to serve as the new Chief Constable of the East Lincolnshire Police Force. Rob Lowe (The West Wing, Code Black) is attached to star.
Wild Bill follows high-flying US cop Bill Hixon (Lowe), who is appointed Chief Constable of the East Lincolnshire Police Force. When he lands in Boston, Lincolnshire, with his 14 year-old daughter Kelsey in tow, he’s hoping they can flee their painful recent past. But this unfamiliar, unimpressed community will force Bill to question everything about himself and leave him asking whether it’s Boston that needs Bill, or Bill that needs Boston?
The six-part series was commissioned by ITV’s Head of Drama Poly Hill and is being produced by 42, Anonymous Content and ITV Studios label Shiver. It was created by David Griffiths, Kyle Killen, Dudi Appleton and Jim Keeble. The lead writers and showrunners are Dudi Appleton and Jim Keeble. The executive producers are Rob Lowe, Eleanor Moran, Rory Aitken, Tim Carter, Dudi Appleton, Jim Keeble, David Griffiths, Kyle Killen, Scott Pennington and Keith Redmon. Chris Thompson is the series producer, while Charles Martin is lead director. Filming gets underway next month. ITV said further casting would be announced at that time.
“Wild Bill gives us an chance to write about modern Britain and modern crime through unique eyes. We wrote this for Rob Lowe, for his smart-talking, anarchic, soulful voice”, said co-creators, executive producers and showrunners Jim Keeble and Dudi Appleton. “Displacing Rob in Brexit Britain and specifically in Boston, Lincolnshire allows us to tell stories that are leftfield and unexpected. We wanted to write something that couldn’t take place anywhere else, or at any other time.”
The log-line for Wild Bill reads as if the lead character is a stand-in for the legendary Bill Bratton. He served as Commissioner of the Boston Police Department, twice as the Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, and Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. He brought the CompStat system to the NYPD and in 2011 was under strong consideration to take over as Commissioner of the Met – an appointment that was scuppered by then Home Secretary Theresa May.
“Wild Bill is Shiver’s first scripted project and brand new territory for the label. Having been fortunate to partner with the innovative and inspiring 42 on other scripted projects before coming to ITV Studios, I am delighted to be working with them again and hope this collaboration will be the first of many”, said Tim Carter, Executive Producer and Managing Director of ITV Studios label Shiver. “Add the peerless track record of US super-producer Anonymous Content into the mix, genius show-runners in Jim and Dudi, and of course a Hollywood legend …it’s beyond exciting.”
