I've just watched the first 2 episodes and it is very good. Martin Clunes is always watchable, and like someone said, even though it's based on real life, its still intriguing and keeps me on the edge if my seat.

Before I started to watch this I was a little concerned that a drama based on terrible relatively recent events would be problematic but it has been excellent.
The difficulties faced by the police, the inter force rivalries and the methodical way they undertake the search for evidence has been captured very well.
Martin Clunes has been very convincing in the central role. Sensitively written, well produced, well acted. A highlight of the year so far!

I thought this was really good. It showed us all the time it takes to sift through things and I thought the apology for making a mistake to that poor family was very well handled. I also thought it was very good at showing how some of them started off a bit cocky and then the sheer slog of painstakingly going through things to find evidence hit them hard but he kept them going and used relavant examples like the Yorkshire Ripper to prove how important it is to rule in and rule out. I think we all appreciate that work and like the French family we can understand that in all of that trawling something might go amiss. Just something as simple as the other DI going on holiday and asking a colleague to check the evidence when it came in.

We stayed with this through all three episodes, finding it compelling viewing. My only pernickety pick was .... I felt it was slightly rushed at the end and we never got to see LB's cockiness turn to hatred and then defeatism when he was officially arrested by Colin (which apparently it did). Colin said in an interview he was glad to see that hatred sent his way as he knew he'd got the right person. Or words to that effect. I still don't understand "why" which is the only reason I watch this type of programme. Perhaps there's no straightforward reason.
But it did highlight the tremendous lengths and tedium involved in sifting through every bit of evidence and the tenuous links between one murder and another.
I just hope that inter divisional relationships have resulted in greater collaboration since.
Full marks to everyone involved.

I agree Foxie, it did seem to end a little early and then we got a load of text to read. But otherwise I thought it was very good indeed. Martin Clunes was excellent. I did find his wife a bit of a prickly character and wondered if they were still together! No update about him at the end (did he retire?) so I assume so.

I just watched all 3 and found it really good. It did well at showing the sheer tedium of investigation and the persistence needed to keep going through all that sifting of evidence. And how one small thing can break a case open if an officer has the imagination to make the leap.
And how one small thing going wrong, like not specifying which video tape has been watched, can lead to such horror. That poor policewoman, that must haunt her still.

And the actor playing Bellfield was scarily like him. Good job he was so much younger when Bellfield came to trial. His life could have been hell.

Just finished watching this. I thought it was excellent and showed what is involved for the police in bringing about justice for victims. Very good acting from everyone too. The only fly in the ointment for me was that my stupid recorder chose the last few moments as Bellfield was being charged to jump and miss the dialogue, something it tends to do at times...but why then?!

I have to say the main channels' schedules have been awash recently with dramatisations of, or documentaries on, old murder cases. In the last couple of weeks we've had 'The Hunt for a Killer' (Swedish) on BBC4, 'A Killing in Tiger Bay' on BBC2, 'Stephen' on ITV, 'Deceit' and then 'Death on the Common' on Channel 4, 'Body in the Snow' on Channel 5, and next Wed/Thur we get 'Fred and Rose West: Reopened' on ITV. Have I missed any?
I must admit though I usually end up watching them, and I'll definitely be taking in S2 of 'Manhunt' as Martin Clunes was very good in the first one.

I was impressed with the first episode and Clunes, downplaying his role in this floundering investigation was excellent.
