But the profiling tactics weren't the initial error that lead to him not being caught years before and that was one which shouldn't have been able to happen.

I've been catching up with this and have also watched the documentary about it that's being shown next Thursday evening but is available now on the STV / ITV player. The fictionalised version is very accurate and, for a change, not sensationalised. In style it reminded me of In Plain Sight, the story of the hunt for Peter Manuel, in that the central detective got his man by quiet, methodical policing. An interesting distinction from crime drama.

Well I thought that was excellent. I read some terrible reviews on IMDb but I found the whole thing very efficiently done, like the first series, and thought Martin did a really good job, as did those playing his team. I burst into tears when Mrs Cole said “he interfered with me”. Those poor people.

I thought it was brilliant, perfectly pitched, showing solid police work. No flash bang wallop, no complicated personal stories distracting us and filing up the time.
Ace script, full of pathos and empathy.
More so it showed how hard the job is and why police officers get burn out.
