ITV has ordered Glass Houses, a new six episode drama series fronted by The Vicar Of Dibley and Delicious star Dawn French.
Glass Houses is set in a picturesque small coastal town with a close-knit community and follows the stories and fall out for Maggie Connors (Dawn French) who doesn’t pay attention to the cautionary adage that ‘those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones’.
Maggie makes it her business to know a bit about everyone’s lives. When a radio journalist interviews her for a small piece about local life she gives him far more detail (and embellishment) about the locals and their personal lives than he was counting on.
In the days and weeks following the show’s broadcast, Maggie sees the butterfly effect of how her very public gossip-fest affects various figures around the town and disrupts their lives.
“Glass Houses is a new drama in the tradition of Doc Martin and The Darling Buds Of May, full of warmth and intriguing characters”, said ITV’s Comedy Controller Saskia Schuster, who commissioned Glass Houses. “This new series will embrace its beautiful idyllic South Devon setting as we meet the villagers of Thurlbury and find out how an innocent afternoon spent indiscreetly gossiping has a domino effect on the whole village.“
Other cast members include Mark Heap (Upstart Crow, The Midnight Gang) as Maggie’s husband Peter, Julie Hesmondhalgh (Happy Valley, Broadchurch) as Maggie’s best friend Jill, Vicki Pepperdine (Getting On, Sally4Ever) as school secretary Karen, and Patrick Robinson (Him, Mount Pleasant) as novelist Marcus.
ITV said further casting would be announced at a later date. Production is set to get underway in South Devon this spring.
I actually quite like the sound of this.

Wonder why they changed the name. Glass Houses sounds more on the nose for the premise and is easier for people to remember, type out when emailing with friends or on social media.

Saw a write up about this, and the actors, and it sounds good. Looking forward to it.

I've seen a couple of trailers for this now, and Dawn French was on the One Show to talk about it this week. It certainly looks like it's worth watching. I'll be there.

It was a bit silly but enjoyably so. I'm not a Dawn French fan. She only ever comes across as one character, no matter what she part she's playing and this was no different but the other cast members saved the day especially Mark Heap as her poor husband and Julie Hesmondhalgh as her "best friend".

I decided to record it, see what people here thought, then watch without ads, or not. It took me a long time to come round to The Vicar of Dibley and that was mainly because of the excellent supporting cast. There seem to be a lot of new series coming at us thick and fast so I may give this a miss.

Dawn French’s character was slightly obnoxious before she even gave the drunken interview. The plot did leap up a notch at the BBQ with the character reactions, so it looks like it might be more interesting next week. A couple of the stories look to be quite emotional, and the pub landlord definitely has a secret. (Does he ever play a good guy?)
I didn’t recognise Mark Heap and had to look him up. Nice to see him playing a straight role for a change. He’s so often the oddball.
