Many years since I read the books bit I have a feeling that he talks about basic training but that's about it. No mention of what he actually did in the War. Which is not unusual for his generation, I guess.

Same generation as my Dad and no, they didn't ever want to talk about the war except for the funny things that happened.

I don't think he was involved in the war much at all. He didn't qualify as a vet until 1939. Then he worked in Sunderland for a few months before moving to Thirsk in 1940. He did enlist in the RAF in 1942 but was discharged as unfit after surgery following flight training.
I don't think vets were conscripted. I think they had to volunteer.
Maybe next series they'll just having him going off for training. They've changed the timeline anyway and had him in Thirsk much sooner than he was was.

I did enjoy having this lovely bit of escapism back again. As ever Samuel West as Siegfried stole the show. He is just brilliant in the role. Mind you, I thought he was given a run for his money by the dogs!

Brilliant episode (as ever).
So many good lines - "Mrs Hall, we KNOW where the ring is!"
"Yes, it's inside a dog!"
James looking at the Alsation in the back seat "why is Clancy coming to wedding?"
"He's a great friend of the practice!"
And Trikki on a cushion!!! By all accounts the dog that plays Trikki is a complete star. It will do anything on command.
And the rat...
I suspect Tristan will be pleased once the land girls start arriving to help on the farms.

This snuck in under the radar for me, perhaps because it was on the same evening as Shetland though at a different time. It is rather good, and though I greatly enjoyed the original series at the time, this is so much better. Not just in its production values which it's unfair to compare with those of forty years ago but the more subtle characterisation, even though I realise the original series was closer to the style of the books.
I was intrigued that only the immediate family attended the wedding. Of course, in a farming area people couldn't just take a day off, but they did have other social gatherings and the vets were probably amongst the best known members of the community. I don't know enough about weddings at that time, if this was usual. My own parents married in 1946 and my mother never forgave my father for wearing his demob suit that didn't fit properly! I'm sure though that he wouldn't have had any choice as there wasn't much money around.

I imagine weddings would be of whatever size you wanted.
However, if we remember she had already jilted someone not to long ago, perhaps they would have kept it small deliberately.

Siegfried’s a horse whisperer! Did they have them in 1939?

My Gt grandfather worked with horses all his life, was said to be a horse whisperer and he died in 1910! Last night's episode made me think of my grandfather (his son) who was responsible for teams of horses pulling guns in France in WWI. He was always haunted by the animals' suffering and having to put them down when they were injured.

I stand corrected, 👍. It was all a bit War Horse this week, so very upsetting imo.

I keep forgetting it's on! Although I did deliberately chose not to watch last week's when I saw the War Horse comment.
