That was lovely! Scruff can come and live with me if he wants. I fell in love with that dear little face

Just glorious viewing! Triss and the budgie - and the reaction of Siegfreid when he found out, by opening a drawer.
Scruff was gorgeous but I would have thought a farmers daughter would have known to control her pet.

Triki toddling after Siegfried - who, as we know, thinks dogs should have a purpose (hunting, herding etc) and not just be "hanging about the place". If ever a dog just 'hung about the place', its Triki. And only he could get beaten up by a hen. The plight of the young widow was very moving. I wonder if she will appear in more episodes? And the roof scene, yes, just lovely.

Came across this halfway through the series – I don't remember seeing it trailered at all, but then I seldom watch C5, only if something catches my eye and then I record it. If I can steel myself to handle C5's catch-up service I'll watch the first three episodes, otherwise wait for the repeats in a few years!
This series does seem to be marmite, with some preferring the original and others, like myself, preferring this version. I do remember Alf Wight, the real James Herriot, saying he was delighted with the original, particularly Christopher Timothy's portrayal of James – but then what else was he going to say! Authors of books given a new lease of life by being adapted generally are delighted. I wonder what he would say about this version. The period detail is gorgeous, though as others have noted it does all seem a bit too clean!

I think it is really good. The only actor I am not that keen on is actually James Herriot, but he’s not bad particularly. I prefer this Siegfried and Mrs Hall.

Lovely interview with the real James Herriot here:
It's quite long and there is footage of him at work, so don't watch with your breakfast!
lt's a reminder of how well received the books were worldwide before they were adapted, first for film and then TV. I'd forgotten that Simon Ward first played James in 1975, with Anthony Hopkins as Siegfried. There was another film two years later with John Alderton as James and Colin Blakely as Siegfried. That must have been a bit confusing! Down to availability, I suppose, as the first film was very successful. Lisa Harrow was Helen in both films. Brian Stirner (who?) played Tristan in the first film only, he doesn't appear in the second, but then Tristan was a minor character in the books.

Of course he was from Sunderland and not Glasgow, but I don't mind the way he's portrayed in this series.
What I hadn't realised was that you didn't need to be a qualified vet to practice in those days. I wonder when that changed or even whether it has. My dad was a veterinary pharmacist and he most certainly treated animals and farm animals in particular. I spent many an hour wrapped up in a land-rover whilst he helped deliver some calf or foal or something. He charged a lot less than a vet but would insist a vet was called if something was serious. He knew Alf and I learnt to drive going backwards abd forwards in the land-rover to Thirsk to pick up supplies.
My father made up his own medicines until the EU regulated everything which was quite late I think perhaps mid 80s.

He was born in Sunderland but the family moved to Glasgow when he was three weeks old and he went to school and university there. There's a blue plaque outside his childhood home on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow. www.visitthirsk.org.uk/pages/jamesherriot.phpHe had a Scottish accent so Nicholas Ralph's accent is an improvement on Christopher Timothy's RP, IMO. Likewise Rachel Shenton's accent for a Yorkshire farmer. Although my grandmother was a Yorkshire woman I'm not familiar enough with the accent to be able to tell how plausible her accent is but it sounds convincing to me!

I think the accent is okay, it's country North Yorkshire, so it's soft and lilty.
