A little light weight in tone better than I'd feared. I am looking forward to part 2.

Well, I thought that was very, very good. I agree. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought Jenna Coleman did a great job as Victoria.

Not sure of he historical accuracy, I have not seen any reference to the very young Victoria taking the salute in uniform, on a horse on a parade ground (as our present queen did) before. Also that she over indulged in champagne at a ball? I stand to be corrected by others better informed. Other than that it was promising and I will watch the next episode.

I enjoyed it. Don't know about historical accuracy, but I thought it was generally well cast, and particularly liked Lord Melbourne, and Victoria herself. Will watch tonight.

A little light weight in tone better than I'd feared. I am looking forward to part 2. Too light weight for me....gave it a second chances last night, lasted 20 mins. Can't put my finger on it.....just very boring - nothing happens. The Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt, is much better.

Jenna Coleman playing dress up just made me wonder when Peter Capaldi was going to appear with an English speaking lesbian lizard.

I can't make up my mind about this programme. On the one hand it is historically accurate - so far, at least - where the facts are concerned. The Lady Flora Hastings scandal happened, Victoria was heavily reliant on Melbourne's advice and guidance and she did try to influence the formation of a new government. Sir John Conroy was an evil influence on the Duchess of Kent, causing Victoria to have a miserable childhood for which she took revenge when she became queen. It is just that there is something not quite right with the way it is all shown. Jenna Coleman doesn't seem to fit the part of the young Victoria, apart from being very small. She is too pretty, too perfect and glossy. I had the same thoughts about the military parade. It is an historical fact that the crown was too big for Victoria at her coronation.....but in this programme so was that ridiculous military cap, something, along with the entire uniform, I am sure she would never have worn. She was wearing trousers, sitting astride the horse which no lady, never mind the queen, would have done then. I think what is wrong, for me, is too much 21st century overlay of the history. I really am not sure whether to bother with it any more. I'm not that enamoured of Poldark either so Sunday evenings might be a bit of a desert!
Edit because I forgot to say....I find the insertion of the "downstairs" stories an unnecessary intrusion, done, I assume, to capitalise on the success of Downton.

I am pleased someone else also felt uncomfortable with the Military Revue scene although I did not notice she was wearing trousers and riding astride. I just assumed it would have been a riding skirt and riding side saddle as most all women did and as the Queen did for many years when she reviewed troops on her official birthday. The cap certainly was an oddity. There are so many books and sources of the facts of the time it seems rather un-necessary to introduce moments like this.

I'm enjoying it with reservations. I don't know too much about Victoria's early days as Queen, so am interested to learn things which will point me in the right direction to find out more. I like the two main actors, and think the interplay between Victoria and Lord Melbourne is well done. I'm looking forward to when Disraeli comes on the scene to see how that is handled. I hope the 'Albert' story doesn't turn into a Mills & Boon! I agree with you, vicky, about the 'downstairs' component. I could well have done with less of that.
