I must confess I hadn't clocked Lord Melbourne's wife as the scandalous Lady Caroline Lamb - as performed by Sarah Miles in the film about her affair with Byron - until I read your link, Miranda. I know there were a couple of mentions of her dalliance with Byron in Victoria, but I didn't make the link, just thought of her as Lady Melbourne in a shadowy sort of way.

Rufus Sewell is such a terrific actor it makes me wonder why Hollywood has never tried to poach him.

Well I am not very keen on this Albert. Bit of a bore IMHO. I rather thought they had "toned down" Lord M a bit this week. He seemed a bit older and in the background, so that the glorious Rufus did not overshadow our hero. I know they have to keep things moving, but it seemed that relations between V&A improved extremely quickly because he was a bit of a git at first and she really didn't like him. Within about ten minutes she had, proposed!

I think this was done rather better, (the proposal) in the ancient ITV series Edward VII with Annette Crosbie as Victoria.

Rufus Sewell is such a terrific actor it makes me wonder why Hollywood has never tried to poach him. They have! He is the lead baddie in an Amazon Prime series called The Man in the High Castle. It is very good and is about what would it would be like if the Germans and Japanese had won WW2. They divide America up with the Germans controlling the east two-thirds and the Japanese the remaining third in the west. Rufus Sewell plays the German Obergruppenfuhrer John Smith! Series 2 starts in December.

I've been enjoying this, even though some of the history is a bit dodgy. I suspect Victoria is a bit more sympathetic than in real life. I don't see much of the fierce passion the royal couple shared. Her relationship with Wellington needs to improve, too - as I understood it she was extremely close to him, and he acted as godfather to at least one of her children. Well written as entertainment, though, and an excellent cast. Not sure the below stairs stuff is really necessary, though.

What I cannot understand about the downstairs staff is how scruffy and rough some of them are! I mean this is the Sovereign's household FGS. Mr Penge or whatever his name is, looks a right scruff to me. Carson he ain't!!!
