ITV has ordered Karen Pirie, a crime drama series adapted from Val McDermid’s series of novels following the young Scottish female detective set in the Scottish university town of St. Andrew’s.
Three feature length episodes have been ordered for the show’s first series, which is being based on the novel The Distant Echo.
Karen Pirie follows Karen, a refreshingly normal and charmingly unfashionable young woman – slick, maverick cop she is not – but her quick mouth and ingenuity make her an impressive investigator. Following her promotion to Police Scotland’s Historic Cases Unit, Karen is tasked with reopening the investigation into a murder that has been the subject of a provocative true crime podcast.
When teenage barmaid Rosie Duff was stabbed to death in 1995, suspicion fell on the three drunken students who discovered her body. But despite police suspicion, the boys were never charged.
Nearly 25 years on, DS Karen Pirie is determined to uncover what happened that fateful night. Do the men know more than they previously revealed? When Karen uncovers flaws in the initial investigation, she finds herself in conflict with the very officers who led the original hunt for the killer.

This sounds quite good. I haven't seen a proper detective series for ages. It'll be nice to see one from episode 1.

ITV said that filming would take place in Scotland and that casting would be confirmed at a later date.
Scotland, huh? Shocker!
I have read some of Val McDermid's books and they are pretty good.

I like Val McDermid who is a polymath – she's half the Scotland team on Round Britain Quiz and what she doesn't know isn't worth knowing. She's also very good on arts review shows. I haven't read her books, which I admit is a glaring omission, but I did watch one episode of Wire in the Blood and couldn't watch more because of her obsession with mediaeval torture methods, graphically realised in that series. I know I should read the books and perhaps this will spur me on to do so.

Meant to add – who will play Karen Pirie? It's kind of important but there doesn't seem to be any information out there as yet.

Ha! That would be good. I think though that Karen is younger (though can't be that young if she is a DS, it's only in drama that they are 12-year-olds). Other than that 'refreshingly normal and charmingly unfashionable young woman' fits well!
I can't think at the moment, it might be someone fresh out of drama school or someone playing small roles who hasn't hit the big time yet.

So, almost a young Vera. It would be so good if they cast someone like that. What about the young actress who was in the country singer film about Glasgow. She was very good in that.
It sound good to me, I like a cold case type drama.

I think that was Jessie Buckley? Yes, she is a little star, she'd be great and it's time she had a leading role.

I've read all Val McDermid's books and love everything she writes but Karen Pirie is my favourite of her characters so I very much look forward to this.
Yes, do read the books. She is SUCH a good writer.

Anyone watch it? 3 part series on Sundays in the 8-10 slot. I’m enjoying it, beautiful shots of St Andrews. But all the while I kept thinking “this plot is familiar, I’m sure I’ve read the book”. Then I googled it, and yes, I read the book during lockdown, and really enjoyed it. Only unfortunately it means that I now remember the plot so I think I know who did it if they are sticking to the book. They may not be though, in the book the murdered girl was found by 4 university students, in this adaptation there are only 3, so they have cut one. Also it’s moved forward by about 20 years to the present day, the book was set in 2002/3.
good book though - will definitely see this one through

Took me a while to find this!
Very much enjoyed the first episode. The flashbacks were well done and the younger versions of their older selves pretty convincing.
Predictable that there would be a cliffhanger at the end but not predictable what it would be! And I'm itching to know how young Ziggy gets out of the well - the trailer seems to suggest he swims out.
Pretty sure the atrium where Karen meets John Scobie is 'The Street' at the University of the West of Scotland. The car park definitely is there. That's in Hamilton, quite a way from St Andrews - location managers scouting around some way. Perhaps they chose it as the building is only three years old so unlikely to have featured in much else so far.
I'm guessing the father of Rosie's baby is one of the brothers, possibly the hairy one, hence the secrecy and swift adoption. I haven't read the book so don't have a clue!
