When they had coal instead of eye-liner, and George Fornby instead of music. you’ve forgotten the bit in between, when, if we couldn’t afford eyeliner, we used a felt tip pen out of the pencil case. And people used to spit in cake mascara - now that did turn my stomach. Did they not know that the human mouth is dirtier than that of any animal? Pink eye, styes, it was like vampire convention... Now - re George Formby, you may not appreciate the rude little ditties, but I challenge you to go away, learn the banjolele (if you haven’t already) and come back and tell me that he wasn’t a musician.

I still use suet, as do most people in the North east - can't beat a dumpling on top of a stew or broth. A favourite is leek pudding with savoury mince and everyone I know makes it, but you can flavour a dumpling with any herb, saffron, cheese or bacon etc.
Baking with suet is quite easy too, you can make it spongey or make a pastry with it. Suet pastry makes a nice pie lid and sweet suet pudding flavoured with orange and lemon with marmalade sauce was one of my father's favourites. That might have been the tablespoon of whisky in the sauce!!
Suet, lard and pure butter are natural unadulterated products much better for you than butter or marg that has synthetic ingredients. They are classed as A grade foods. Pastry is still lovely made with half pure butter and lard.
The Be-Ro Cook Book still has a suet section (available from their website).

It was such a shame but they did have some nightmares going on didn’t they? And there were two lovely looking showstoppers and two disasters!

Hermine did have a bad day, shame, she has been so consistent up till then. Laura's presentation was messy, as usual. Don't think she has progressed much in that aspect over the whole series. . Peter has been one of my favourites right from the start, as winner can't now be Hermine, hope he gets it!

I think the judges' comments to Dave about how much he's improved suggest they are leaning towards him

Dave reminds me of Tim Henman so he may choke in the final....

Didn't Kathy Burke say on Extra Slice that Hermine was her fav - and that she hoped she didn't jinx her?

I can’t help but feel Hermine suffered under the weight of the judges’ expectations. They kept saying how disappointed they were, and she obviously felt the pressure. She then made the classic overthinking mistake of throwing out her plan and trying to wing it with an untested recipe.
Peter must be the obvious favourite. His showstopper looked amazing.

I think Hermine was wrong to change her show stopper the night before. The original was not working so she went for something else - maybe she could just have tweaked the first one? She was second in the technical but last in the first round with the rum babas.
Didn't the person who went out in bread week admit to being a 'bread specialist'?
But 4th out of however many 1000s applied is pretty good going.

I agree Bidie. As soon as she admitted she would be winging it in the showstopper I sensed danger!
