It looked to me as if Sura was pissed off to be leaving. Maybe she thought Lottie should have gone? It was a close call in some respects but a raw showstopper is a bit of a death knell. I thought the same. She seemed annoyed. But they all had a bad first round, her second round babka (sp?) was flat and The the last round was raw. As bad as others might have been in the showstopper they were all edible, so no way anyone else should have gone over her. I like Hermine, Mark and Laura. They just seem like they're having fun. I don't think I've ever seen anyone smile as much as Mark.

Hard to imagine you wouldn't have tried working with white chocolate when you know there is chocolate week.
We all have disasters though. I'm 60/40 on caramac ganache!!! It's a lovely alternative topping for carrot/sticky toffe things

Pastry Week
How pretty were those caged tarts? Although I did keep waiting for Noel or Matt to make the obvious jokes.
Has anyone else seen the accusations of racism because for three weeks in a row BAME contestants were ejected? Maybe I was ultra sensitive this week because of that, but it did irritate me a bit that Hermione had such a great week and yet didn’t even get mentioned as possible Star Baker.
Anyway, at least the right person went.

I agree about Hermione beth - she is quiet and understated but consistent. Some contestants get over looked - footage wise - in favour of others.
I still like Peter, the Edinburgh lad.
Both Sura (last week) and May (?) this week had a bad time in all the rounds and really had to go.

I like them all with the slight exception of Dave who is a bit competitive for my taste. Poor old Linda! Pastry week is my week!!!
I did read the racism story. We get that every year in SCD and now GBBO! The worst baker has to leave regardless of skin colour!!! I did slightly wonder at Prue’s comment about what great bakers they all are, because it seems to me that nearly everyone is having some kind of disaster. There just seem more mistakes or breakages etc this year.

Linda - where did I get May from?
Dave always reminds me, looks wise, of Tim Henman.
I suppose Prue was referring to the 1000s of applicants they get each series and the process of whittling it down. Those who get into the tent must therefor be 'great bakers'. Anyone can have an off day and having to bake in an unfamiliar kitchen, in front of a camera whilst being expected to explain what you are doing and make conversation with the judges would be beyond me!
Japanese week next time - something new.

Yes I agree Bidie, you make a good point: in fact for me you could stop your list after “having to bake”.

Aaah, poor old Mark. He was such a jovial chap too. But I have to say I didn’t reckon much on his avocado cake, even if it did have a baby inside. Not that I liked Laura’s pineapple effort either.
Isn’t it a bit unusual for a food judge to ask for one to be made for him without ingredient X? In this case the gherkin, which I can completely understand btw.

Sorry to see Mark go but his show stopper looked fab but tasted bad.
Lottie's toadstool was a delight. The wafer thin crepes were a challenge for everyone.
80s week next week. I lived through the 80s and do not remember any particular cakes?

I missed the last 15 mins as I went to watch The Sister with Dad. I shall catch up with this in a bit.

I'm trying to think of any bakery items popular in the 80s - cheesecake perhaps. Mississipi Mud Pie that type of thing.

Is that when American muffins started to appear?
I have never seen a cooking competition where a judge asked for an ingredient to be left out because of personal taste preference. And I had to sympathise with Lottie (even though I don’t like her much), when she said her bun filling was only dry because Paul didn’t want the relish inside.

I suppose Pru tasted them with the gherkin and the judges know how much of a difference one ingredient would make.
Matt Lucas will need to go to Fat Fighters after this - he is getting quite the tummy.

My favourite, Hermine, finally wins Star Baker!
Laura dodged the bullet again, but I think she’ll go next week.
