Whatever happened to Angus Deighton? ....dunno....best presenter of the show in my opinion... I agree. While HGNIFY is still one of the best things the BBC puts out (though it has its moments) the rotation of guest hosts is often hit and miss and few hit the right note, for me, that Deayton seemed to hit pretty much from the off. I think it’s often forgotten that he was the original host of Would I Lie To You and left that following a problem with the BBC over a scripted gag about a pre-deceased, and well known sex offender (yes, even then) Jimmy Saville, and they preferred to throw Deayton under the bus, rather than their own editorial department, or just stand by the delivered, and aired, show. To my knowledge that episode was never repeated on the BBC and is edited on Dave.

Wasn't Deayton caught out using cocaine? I think the BBC had no choice but to let him go. He was becoming the news rather than being able to laugh at it.

He still does a lot of radio comedy for the BBC. I didn't recall seeing him on TV since he left HIGNFY, but in fact he has presented various shows, generally leaving amid controversy of one kind or another according to his Wiki entry. He is mainly an actor leaning towards comedy roles, with a steady stream of small parts.

I think he was, yes He wasn't let go for being caught out for using cocaine - or using sex workers. When that was revealed they kept him on - albeit with a pay cut - but then a couple of months later a woman came forward that said he had a relationship with her for two-and-a-half years, during which his partner was also pregnant and gave birth, that they let him go. It was ostensibly because he became the story and, for a show that, to some extent*, sets a moral tone, that would no longer work for them. * Editorially HIGNFY has always played fast and loose with the moral tone - most recently with the sniping about Joe Biden and his age - so there'll always be a stink of hypocrisy about the way they handle it (generally, not just specifically to Angus Deayton).

From what I remember, the show straight after the revelations became purely about him and Paul and Ian making constant fun of him. It was funny for the first few comments but then it began to feel like bullying and became really uncomfortable. I think that's when the BBC decided to sack him

From what I remember, the show straight after the revelations became purely about him and Paul and Ian making constant fun of him. It was funny for the first few comments but then it began to feel like bullying and became really uncomfortable. I think that's when the BBC decided to sack him After the first set of revelations, in May 2002, the next episode Hislop and Merton went about it in a light hearted way, shoe horning in references at even the smallest opportunity, even Ken Livingstone got some jabs in, and Deayton took it on the chin and with some good humour. That episode was the highest rated of the series, by some margin, if not the highest ever. When the next set of revelations came out, in the October, Merton was of the view Deayton should go immediately (so he said in a later interview with Michael Parkinson). The previous week even Christine Hamilton was getting prickly with Deayton following his barbed references about "the disgraced former MP" Neil Hamilton, so clearly the intervening months hadn't dampened things down. The producers disagreed and even tried to sanitise the episode, so Hislop and Merton just went for him, believing he shouldn't be there and that was his last episode. Merton was host the next week and Ross Noble was in his seat.

Didn't Paul have a T-Shirt printed with the tabloid headline which he revealed towards the end of the recording?

Ah. I misremember when it was then. I just remember feeling really uncomfortable watching it and wasn't surprised to see he'd gone by the next one.
