It wasn't decided on a blatant dive, the in-house referee said quite clearly there was a body check and VAR doesn't just look at the feet.
Besides the penalty, if you don't think it was deserved, was missed. It was the rebound that went in.
There were lots of moments in the game where the ref could have been more generous to England and he wasn't. He was quite balanced in the end.

Gareth has admitted it was a lucky penalty - but I just read that someone in the crowd was shining a laser pen at the Danish goalie as the penalty was taking. Shocking!

Gareth has admitted it was a lucky penalty - but I just read that someone in the crowd was shining a laser pen at the Danish goalie as the penalty was taking. Shocking! I liked Keane's comment - paraphrasing - Sometimes you can be lucky or good. Rarely both. However the in-house referee said he would have given it due to the body check by the two massive Danish defenders, as that is enough to cause the trip. He reminded us that referees look at the whole body not just the feet. Besides there were other times in the game where we didn't get obvious fouls in our favour and times when we did. Mind you I always laugh when Keane starts saying 'they need to say calm' - like he did, I suppose. Some of the commentary was dire but when they cut to the England Women's Manager and she said, "We've got this now, Denmark are finished, we've worn them down", I wondered if I was watching the same game, but she was right. They used all of their subs to try and win in 90 minutes and here was extra time looming. Italy will be a very different game, we will have to really go for it to break through. It won't be a patient build up and I think we might see some changes in the team. Hopefully Pickford gets his head together, he lost it for a while. People who know him up here, say that he has been having counselling for depression and Southgate supports him to use this and you could see him using his trigger words or sentences to calm down and regulate himself. God, it must be so stressful. A goalie is supposed to save everything, even a cracking free kick, but he is not the one who creates the free kick or penalty, that's one of his team mates letting him down. So no criticism from me for missing that free kick. I'm sure he couldn't see much until the ball loomed over the top of those tall Danish defenders. On we go! |

Yes it was a lucky penalty. If it was a Danish player going down we would have felt hard done by. Originally I thought it was a pen but on slo-mo not. |

Rufus there were Danish players doing exactly the same, it is part of the game, and I'm not saying that it's new ether, because I'm old enough to remember some bone crunching tackles that the ref did nothing about in the past, really bad stuff. The ref last night said it was a body check and that's against the rules. The ref called a penalty, VAR called a penalty. It's not like we bribed them. Lucky possibly, but you can't win a tournament without a bit of luck. Wait until you see the Italians rolling about the place, they must do a special course in Spain, Italy and Portugal on diving. We got a yellow card for Maguire and that looked tamer than a dead cat, in terms of jeopardy.
We don't know who had the laser pen, so we can't even say it was an English fan, it could be someone who hates Leicester, or just being a tosser. It happens, there are morons in every sporting venue. Schmeichel saved the penalty so it can't have interfered that much.
I am going back a long way but I remember a Hartlepool v Preston North End game, where after half time there were lots of pies left and some guys came around with those ice cream type trays they used in cinemas asking if anyone wanted any. The next thing I knew half the crowd behind the goal is flinging pies at the Preston goalie and they're getting shredded by the net. He was rained in pastry and everyone, even him was laughing. He even threw some back. It didn't put him off he never let a goal in the whole match. They were pretty naff pies if I remember rightly!!!

That makes sense. It's the first time people have been able to get together and that song does make you feel good to sing it. And no-one can resist the BAH BAH BAH!  |
