Thanks. I seem to have vague memories of a runners up match.

Thanks. I seem to have vague memories of a runners up match. 1980 was the last time Euros did it...vagueness through the mists of time, perhaps ... but it was never worthwhile to them to cover the cost of hosting it as it was never considered that much of a viewer attraction. World Cup has it, but the audience reach is far greater and it's more likely to feature teams that are attractive to a neutral viewer.

In Italy the press are criticising our players for taking off their medals and suggesting it was an insult to them. From what I can remember players have been doing this for some time and I can't see how it was directed at the Italians.
On another point, the photograph of the man with a lit flare up his backside claiming he got into Wembley free. It now appears that photo was from ages ago and has been doing the rounds for some time.

That picture was being used along with the PM saying it’s up to the great British public to use their common sense and take account of personal responsibility

Question:
If we get the Euros will all 5 countries qualify automatically?

Ermmm.... I don't think so. The last time was 96 and neither Norn nor Wales were in it.

But if the UK & Ireland joint bid is accepted, how would they choose which country automatically went through. When it was Switzerland and Austria they both went through.

Oh. Didn't realise it was a joint bid. Dunno then. It's four countries, which is a whole group.

They may insist on a GB team.

Question: If we get the Euros will all 5 countries qualify automatically? Should imagine so. Can't see any other way around it. Don't think a GB option would be very popular amongst the home nations.

I think a GB team would set a precedent. Scotland refused when it was muted before and I can't see Ireland wanting part of that.
There are 32 teams in the Euros and I think most of these teams would qualify anyway. Unless someone found themselves in a group with Gernany, Spain, Holland and France- lord can you imagine.

Ireland wouldn't be included in GB, would they? So how is it 5 countries?

The bid is a combined bid: England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland.
With 32 teams in the competition now they need countries or combinations of countries with at least 8 massive stadiums. Most countries in Europe only have a couple or three.

Oh right, sorry. When you said the UK and Ireland Bid, I assumed you meant Norn.

Currently only two teams are able to pre-qualify as hosts. UEFA have intimated that for this bid - which is unopposed and likely to be realised - pre-qualifying as "hosts" would be based on national ranking at a certain date so, at the moment, that would be England and Scotland.
It was Euro 2000 that had the first joint hosts - Belgium and Netherlands - and that's when UEFA modified their constitution to allow two pre-qualifiers as hosts. 2012 was Ukraine & Poland as joint hosts. One of the bids for Euro 2008, when Austria and Switzerland hosted, was a 4-way Scandi effort, so UEFA would have had this issue on their mind, at that point, should it have been successful (they probably declined it due to being dimly lit, incredibly moody, and with a propensity to chunky knitwear and cross-border murder). There was also bids from Bosnia and Herzegovina–Croatia and Greece-Turkey (which should have won, IMHO).
If it wasn't so politically fractious, Gibraltar should pally up with Spain to host, so at least they'd have a look in.
