BBC One’s new drama series Vigil will premiere on Sunday August 29th at 9pm.
The second episode will air the following evening (Monday August 30th at 9pm) before the series settles into its regular Sunday night 9pm time-slot.
Vigil is a crime thriller about a death on-board a Trident nuclear submarine.
When a crew member is found dead on board the HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva must go aboard to begin an investigation.
Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.
The drama series, which was created by Tom Edge, stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston, Paterson Joseph, Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

I'll be trying it. Radio Times puts it top of their list of 20 programmes to watch out for this autumn (and points out there's a special advance screening of episode 1 on 23rd. August followed by an on-stage discussion with cast members, for which you can buy tickets from BFI).

I shall try it but I reckon setting something in a submarine will give them every excuse to go for the dark lighting again, where you can see diddly squat.

Well, I enjoyed it. And there was no dark scenes at all throughout the episode! It was great hearing the actors using their own accents. Martin Compston and Rose Leslie, Scottish. And Shaun Evans with his actual Liverpool accent. I haven't heard that since he was in Sparkle a few years ago!
Next episode tomorrow at 9pm.

I suppose the basic premise is a bit unlikely. I can suspend disbelief well enough to enjoy it though because it seems so well done. It nice to have a really good drama to watch once more.

My feelings whilst watching Ep.1 (haven't got round to the second one yet) have been confirmed by a naval historian and a retired submariner both quoted in today's Telegraph who say that any suspected crime aboard a Royal Navy ship would come under the jurisdiction of the military, not the civilian police and would be subject to a court martial. That is what I thought. It's still very, very good though: thoroughly gripping and I'm really looking forward to watching Ep.2 later today.

It is very good - I was gripped throughout! Anyone know where it was filmed? (I’m assuming not actually at Faslane)

It is very good - I was gripped throughout! Anyone know where it was filmed? (I’m assuming not actually at Faslane) Radio Times only quotes Suranne Jones as saying "The sets are amazing. We walked into this big warehouse and it was just beautifully done. - you really buy that they are on a submarine" ....so that's only the interior scenes. I assumed the shots at sea of the sub surfacing and diving were CGI but all I can find for the outdoor shots is that it was filmed in Scotland with various locations around Glasgow.

I could not believe how unrelentingly rude that XO fellow was allowed to be! What a git.
Also, it sounded a bit iffy to me that after three days they were going to pop her up on a raft!!!! On her own!! Presumably to be scooped up by helicopter. That would have meant a No from me, thank you very much.
