The Thief, His Wife And The Canoe will premiere on ITV on Sunday April 17th at 9pm.
The Thief, His Wife And The Canoe tells the real life story of how John Darwin faked his own death to claim life insurance and avoid bankruptcy. The drama focuses on how Anne Darwin became complicit in her husband’s deception as she started to convince the world, their family and friends, the police and insurance companies, that he had gone missing in 2002 whilst canoeing off the coast of Seaton Carew in Cleveland, where the couple owned two large houses with panoramic views of the sea. The deception was to take its toll on Anne who lied to their sons, Mark and Anthony, for five years whilst her husband, in the early days of the fraud, secretly lived in a bedsit next door to the home he shared with Anne.
Devastated by the loss of their father, neither son had an inkling their parents were capable of such treachery. Anne and John Darwin eventually decided to leave Seaton Carew and move to Panama City to start a new life together before their secret was exposed by the discovery of an infamous photo of them posing in a Panama real estate office in July 2006. At her trial Anne Darwin pleaded not guilty, arguing that she had been coerced into the plot by her husband, but the jury didn’t believe her. She and her husband were both jailed for more than 6 years.
The four-part drama stars Monica Dolan, Eddie Marsan, Mark Stanley, Dominic Applewhite, and Karl Pilkington.

I shall be watching this. I always wondered how they got away with it for so long, and how / why they were stupid enough to allow themselves to be photographed like that. I know it will be full of 'artistic licence' and other assumptions, but am sure it will make for intriguing viewing.

I can't understand how they could do that to their kids.

I won't be watching on a point of principle. They are not Geordies, they are from Seaton Carew which is next to Hartlepool and has a completely different accent. Nothing like Geordie at all and that's just lazy production.

I hope they don't glorify these two. I know people can get desperate about money but they had other choices and to do that to your kids is way over the line.

I think it's more likely to be portraying her as being forced into it. Her sons have been campaigning for a review/retrial for a long time. They say their father forced her to do it.
The jury in the original trial were absolutely unconvinced of her innocence as she had years to come clean. Starting with the day he did it. And she never admitted it to her sons either. I mean did they really believe their mother independently decided to go and live in South America - my kids would probably think I was on something!! I suppose they must.

I'm in two minds about this. Have seen the trailer, I agree with Miranda, to lie to your own children is despicable. I may watch just out of curiosity.

I get that sometimes. There's the first trailer, then the second trailer and the interviews on TV and journalists rehashing the case and you just think - nah, I've seen enough already.
Especially when it's about a couple of awful people doing an awful thing - I don't know how they would make it redeeming, if indeed that is the aim.

Was this man really as insensitive and stupid as he is portrayed in this? It's hard to believe but then what we know he did is hard to believe too but it happened. I think the acting is superb, especially from Monica Dolan. I think she is an unsung actress and should have more recognition.

However, on Wikipedia it says he was born in Hartlepool.

Monica Dolan is brilliant in this. The husband comes over as deeply unpleasant, is this how he is in real life?

Hard to believe this is based on a true story. Couldn't make it up.

However, on Wikipedia it says he was born in Hartlepool. He's been getting tons of complaints actually. The accent in and around Hartlepool is nothing at all like a Geordie, he even says that they were originally from Blackhall (near Hartlepool) as if that makes a difference. It doesn't to people who know the area, and it matters to people. Everyone up here gets so fed up with the idea that everyone is a Geordie and sounds like a Geordie. Hartlepool/Seaton Carew/Blackhall/Blackhall Rocks is half a Yorkshire accent and quite different. He's also been getting flack because it's a kayak and not a canoe!!!!! I don't know why directors and producers don't think people will be bothered. It's just sloppy production.
