I haven't seen it yet either, saving it up. When Colin Dexter was too frail to take part in filming, they started giving him a cameo like this. I think that started in the last series. Now he's no longer with us it's good to hear they are keeping it up. It’s about 9 minutes in, the new young copper who’s doing a spot the ball competition moves his paper and the article is underneath “LOCAL MAN APPEALS FOR MISSING MANUSCRIPT”

I loved the spot the ball reference! My dad used to do it in our local paper every week but I'd forgotten all about it.

My dad won StB once! He used to do the one in the local paper every week. It wasn't a fortune but it did pay for a week at Butlins.

I somehow forgot this, so caught up today. A joy. I laughed through a lot of scenes - such well-written dialogue. I guessed the motive for the murders early-ish, but not “who”, and almost cried in the denouement.
I went through Summertown to work by taxi for many years and occasionally spotted Colin Dexter wandering down to the shops. One day I mentioned to my cabdriver someone told me CD lived on the corner of Squitchey Lane. “Nah,” he said, “That’s where Tolkien’s daughter lives. I’ll show you Colin Dexter’s house. It’s that one...where Colin Dexter is coming through the gate.”
It was the most “Oxford” conversation I’ve ever had.

I liked last night's. There were some nice shots that recalled old movie styles; the fate of the murderer mirroring that of the Mummy; a 'cursed' film, a shifty Egyptian academic, relics being used to frighten people - all rather Agatha Christie. The scene with the Thursdays meeting Bright at the restaurant was deliciously awkward.

I enjoyed it but found the Phil Daniels a bit OTT and not believable as Fred's brother. I'm also increasingly cross with Joan, who seems to be punishing her father for caring about her. I'm not sure where her story is going other than not towards getting together with Morse. Morse's one-night stand also seemed a bit out of character. We know in later life he kept falling in love with women who either died or left him, but his approach was to put them on a pedestal and worship from afar. Had his fingers burnt perhaps!

I like the little asides such as the comment to his brother "The twins are okay aren't they"...........Kary twins loved it. I thought the brother was showing where the family had come from and the way life can change you.

Yes I noticed the comment about the Krays, very nice. I wasn’t looking for it but did anyone spot the Colin Dexter appearance?
