I thought the house looked utterly gorgeous ... and am disappointed to hear it is not open for visitors.

Yes, it sounds like some kind of sex party that has gone horribly wrong. While Julie Hesmondhalgh's performance was indeed riveting, the whole scene was very reminiscent of Alison O'Donnell's scene in the most recent series of Shetland (she was also taken to SARC), rightly praised for its depiction of the aftermath of rape and its immediate impact on the traumatised victim. Brave of 'Axehampton House' to agree to being the on-screen venue for this! Of course that happens a lot in fiction with nefarious goings-on in stately homes, but I didn't think it made it look very attractive. The house, in reality Bridehead in Dorset, has an interesting history which you can see here: historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1000712. It's privately owned, not a hotel or conference venue, which may be why it looked a bit forlorn when Hardy and Miller visited. I'm intrigued by the house Cath and Jim live in too – they must have private funds, surely (funded by sex parties?!). Something fishy going on there even if Jim turns out not to be the attacker after that rather obvious signposting of the condoms in his glove compartment. Definitely a strong first episode and I'll be back. Yes, great start. I'm assuming a sex/swingers party. Maybe Trish was the only one there who hadn't gone for that reason, but just as Cath's work colleague - another guest, not realising this, decided to adopt stronger techniques when she didn't comply with his advances - Cath said to Jim she thought it was all their fault, perhaps knowing they shouldn't really have invited her. I'm sure Jim will turn out to be the first of several red herrings... The condoms in his car could just be part of a supply he & Cath got in for their party guests. There was a fight at the party between him & Ed (Lenny Henry, the shop owner) which was why Cath initially thought the police had come to question her - wonder what or who that was about. I hadn't appreciated how good Cath & Jim's house looks - you're right, doesn't seem affordable on a car mechanic's & shop worker's salaries.

Wow, this got off to a cracking start, so much better already than series two. Can't wait for next week.

It's been a long wait, but if the rest of the series is as good as Episode 1, I'll be very happy. I've loved all of Broadchurch so far, including Series 2.
Julie Hesmondhalgh gave an incredible performance, and I loved seeing Hardy and Miller back in action. Olivia Coleman recently described their relationship as very Hinge & Brackett, which totally cracked me up (and I agree with her!). I'm thinking that Jim looks too obvious, but it's early days yet.
Really glad Beth has kicked that selfish, childish husband of hers out. About time too! Roll on next Monday.

I agree with everyone. A great start to this third series.

Really enjoyed this, as was confirmed by me shutting down my laptop, and putting my book away.

I finally got around to watching this. It looks like it's going to be another interesting story. What's going on with Lenny Henry's character? If the police turned up I wouldn't be telling them to be quick because she's supposed to be working. What's he up to.
Sarah Parish is in this. Is there any show that she and Tennant haven't worked on! lol Blackpool, Doctor Who, Recovery and even W1A...although Tennant is the voiceover! And they're both going to be in You, Me and Him.

Another good episode. We are supposed to be suspicious of Trish's ex (motive, opportunity, won't give DNA, washing clothes and shoes), so I am not! Could it be the Vicar, wanting to boost his congregation a bit and be the centre of town life again?

I think Trish's husband is too obvious, too early as well - there's some other reason he's washing clothes & refusing DNA sample.
The vicar is a bit far-fetched - though there were at times whiffs of suspicion around him in the earlier series as I recall.
The taxi driver is another suspect, switching his radio off deliberately for some hours apparently - what was he up to? And the cocky lad who's in charge of Daddy's rope & fishing net supplier...
Ed turns out to be the keen young DC's father so probably not him (though you never know...). I can't believe his fight with Jim during the party was just about Cath's duty rota at work - surely that isn't something they'd come to blows about, especially if they've been arguing about it for ages as someone said.

Yes, lots of red herrings swimming past at the moment. I think at this stage in the proceedings in the first series we were suspecting the vicar too, with his long meaningful stares into the middle distance that turned out to be the thoughts of a recovering alcoholic. It's good that Mark is a plumber, isn't it - he can pop up anywhere and have off-the-cuff conversations that may or not be meaningful.
I do wonder if Joe Miller is going to pop up again at some point. I don't think we're done with Tom Miller yet and his shifty behaviour with the laptop in the first series was never explained. Or it may just be that his exclusion from school was to allow Ellie and Beth to bond over the unfairness of life. Several plot strands from the first episode were not picked up on in the second, but it will all come together. Can't wait!

Another terrific episode leaving us once again wondering..
I have to say I din't like the female cop. Quite rightly they are reining her in.

I agree Trishs ex seems a red herring, washing his clothes when there's another 6episodes to go, it can't be that obvious can it? Something's going on with the vicar but what? Could he really have something to do with Trish? It's very interesting. I'm wondering if the Father will take revenge on Joe Miller, he doesn't want the compensation and doesn't believe justice has been done so will the series end with him in the dock.

I'll be disappointed if we don't see Joe Miller again. I think it would be wasting a great opportunity if he didn't put in an appearance. I don't mean in connection with the current crime, but I think we should see him get some sort of comeuppance. Maybe be arrested for stalking or something.
I'm wondering why the detective constable has a different surname to her father. I suppose she could be married, but she seemed a bit young for that.

I love the scenes between Olivia Coleman , (Another Bafta?) and David Tennant. Also her sarcasm towards the young DC. Never seen much of Julie Hesmondhalgh but her facial expressions speak volumes. Brilliant drama.
