Ok, so I've now seen episode 2 of series 2. Claire wangles an invitation to Versailles to meet the King of France (Louis XV) and I couldn't more unconvinced by what she wore as being typical dress than if she'd worn a bikini!
Claire wore a bright red dress (ok in itself) but with a cleavage almost down to the naval. Even Jamie commented on it, but she seemed to say it was of the time. Jesus, it was even before the time of 1940s which she is from! I noticed that none of the other female character wore such a blatantly revealing dress. I know that accentuating the cleavage was fashionable at the time, but they didn't let all hang loose! Hmm ... not overly happy with this episode. And had waxing really been invented by then?

It is discussed here:
"Waxing" was around in the 16th century, if it can be called that. One method involved the use of arsenic.

The neckline on the dress didn't bother me so much as the plainness of it. It needed some decoration, at least. I know they said they wanted it plain to stand out, and they thought it was more 'Claire', but it just didn't look right - even a little lace (as trimming on the cuffs and neckline, for example) and decorative embroidery on the body, simply to break-up the wall of red, would have given it a slightly more period air without ruining the distinctive look they were after. Despite the 'saddle-bags' it just looked too modern.
That aside, I thought it was a good episode (although I must admit I couldn't remember who Simon Callow's character was!). I liked the portrayal of Bonnie Prince Charlie, though perhaps he needed to be better-looking and even more 'continental' - apparently, when he fled Culloden his second-in-command yelled "Run, you cowardly Italian!" after him!

I am just starting this week's episode -taking a break from my Americans marathon - and haven't got to the fashions yet (can't wait!) but actually I don't think much of this Prince Charles. I know he was supposed to be dissolute but he is hardly what you would call Bonnie is he? And I can't see this twerp being able to rally the troops.

A broadsword right in the nadgers! Yikes! {SPOILER:Click to Show}The trouble is, we know Jack survives (and in 'working order'), at least for now, because we've already seen that Frank hasn't been deleted from the timeline. I'm worried about Fergus, though - I assume it was something concerning him that provoked Jamie to break his promise.

A good last five minutes in the episode. I have found this series a bit flat compared to the first. It isn't helped I think by Jamie being out at the brothel all night whilst Clare is at home and the poor acting by Charles Stuart. Re Randall and his working parts, I imagine he could be cuckolded by his brother.......

"Sex, violence, scenes of sexual violence, and scenes which viewers may find upsetting from the start". Other than that, it's all in the best possible taste!

This second series has been marking time up until now. Claire said their return to Scotland was like a tonic to her, but it felt like one for the series, too, brief though the scenes at Lallybroch were. Hopefully we'll get a return to some action and adventure after all that moping around Paris getting depressed.
When they announced the helpline for any issues raised at the end of the last episode, I was tempted to phone up and say "Hello, a Jacobite pretender to the throne has forged my signature on a delcaration of support for his invasion, thus making me an unwilling traitor."

We're back in Scotland! Thank goodness for that. I for one had had enough of Paris.
