I think Jane Austen’s input ended with the first episode!

I did think the Esther/Babington story was quite Austenesque - a young woman seduced into a dodgy relationship redeemed by the love of a respectable man. Though what JA would have made of the almost, sort of incest ...

I like your ideas Delia but where's the smut?
Does no-one stumble across another character in the buff? Does no-one get tossed off in a woodland glade. No-one even shagged bandy on a stone floor?
Doesn't sound very Jane Austen to me.

This might be the sort of thing Andrew Davies had in mind...

There was an interview today in the Sunday Times with Andrew Davies who said he did that ending to get a second series. Well, that's all very well and good, but there has not yet been a suggestion that ITV will commission one!

I always think Andrew Davies comes across as a rather arrogant man.

I did think the Esther/Babington story was quite Austenesque - a young woman seduced into a dodgy relationship redeemed by the love of a respectable man. Though what JA would have made of the almost, sort of incest ... JA did write about people who ended up in dodgy relationships, scandals, dull marriages and had boring lives. Her point was always that the daughters of impoverished gentleman and even rich ones were dictated by their ability to marry, have family they could depend on, become governesses or ended up with small lives in shrunken apartments with a meagre existence if they didn't. It did not escape her readers that she was writing about them and neither did the prospect of a dull marriage in comfortable surroundings. What JA did not write about were the sexual antics they got up too during these relationships. However for a woman who on the surface had very little opportunity to form relationships with men she was able to write about seething passions.

Cancelled due to not getting the hoped-for audience, says ITV (I wish the Beeb would be this honest, instead of trotting out "making way for new shows" when axing something that is itself new).
ITV do also say that it's yet to show in the US, and if it goes down well there things could change.

That is a shame imho. Taken on its own merits I thought it was very enjoyable.
Given the copious amounts of male nudity and incest, I am surprised it didnt do better!!!!!

Good news! (for me, anyway). Following success in the US it's now been un-cancelled, and two further seasons have been announced - to be available exclusively on BritBox initially, then aired on ITV at a later date.

Oh yes, that is good news! Well when it comes to ITV at least. But I hope they reshow the original first because I have forgotten most of it, well except for the sex of course, 😂.
How amazing it did better in the US, so much so that it is uncancelled. Maybe it’s the Bridgerton effect!

I’m glad, it ended on such a cliffhanger, it would be good to see more. I think you’re right, it is the “Bridgerton effect”

The second series of Sanditon will receive its UK premiere on BritBox UK on Monday March 21st.
No idea if/when it will come to ITV.
