Laurel Canyon. 2x90 minute films. Friday 13 @ 11.15 and Saturday 14 November @ 10.55.
The story of Laurel Canyon and the famous musicians who once lived there.
This was shown before when the channel was subscription only.
A young chap who lived here (well he also worked for Sky!) was raving about this to me and was sure I would love it. He wondered if I had heard of Crosby, Stills and Nash and Neil Young. I think he was quite impressed when I said heard of and saw live.

I remember hearing on the news back in February that, after close to half a century living in the US, Neil Young had finally become a naturalized Yank citizen. He said he did it for one reason. To vote.

I have enjoyed Simon Rattle conducting orchestral concerts on Sky Arts, particularly Bruckner's 8th Symphony, as I have never seen any of his music performed on TV, and he is my favourite composer. The BBC never seems to broadcast concerts apart from the Proms and the New Year's day concert from Vienna.

I have the box set of the "Monterey Pop Festival" which was the first of the big musical festivals of the 1960s. I think it was like 6 weeks before Woodstock.
It was arranged by the Mamas and Papas and the first time people in the US ever saw live performances by The Who and Jimi Hendrix.
Here is the full set of the Mamas and Papas.
Cass Elliot was divine. RIP

Degas: Passion for Perfection.
Monday 16th November, 7.00.
The story of the artist, filmed to tie in with an exhibition of his work in Cambridge in 2017.
I saw a Degas exhibition some years ago at the Royal Academy and thought it was wonderful.

Loved California Dreamin' took me down Memory Lane. Cass Elliott had a fantastic voice. As did all the others.

I read a snippet in today’s Sunday Times about the Degas programme and it said he was a misanthropist, misogynist, homophobe and xenophobe!!! I wish I hadn’t read it now because that rather tarnishes my enjoyment of the show I saw. 😡

There was a lot of ado about Cass Elliott's weight. It didnt help that she wore those 'Little House on the Prairie' granny dresses that were popular with hippies but that fit like a tent.
By today's standards in the US she would be considered very average. Women tend to embrace their size. They are considered 'thick' (not the same meaning as in UK) or 'BBW' (big beautiful woman) and larger women considered the most desirable by many men.
They are well represented on television and in music.
It helps that clothing companies have created lines of flattering clothing for full figured women.
Ann Wilson of Heart is a fine example.
