I haven’t been watching The Great. I couldn’t get into it at first and now realise that may have been an error. But series 1 wasn’t available for catch up before starting series 2, so this will be my alternative dose of Russian history.

Bill Bailey’s Master Crafters, Thursday 8.00.
This is sort of a second series of the Jim Moir show last year where trainee craftspeople (blacksmith, stained glass etc) competed to make a piece for Prince Charles. It returns minus Jim and a Prince but I did find the last one very interesting and thought I wrote about it too, but clearly not in the right place!

Patrick Melrose.
Sky’s well received drama series starring Benedict Cumberbatch starts on Thursday 10 August at 9.00. This makes a change, them giving us a top tier drama series on Freeview!

Patrick Melrose.
I think this is absolutely horrible! Everyone in it is absolutely vile except for Patrick, who was ruined by his upbringing I guess (I’ve only seen 1 and 2). I can only take so many scenes of Benedict Cumberbatch jonesing, although I do agree his acting is really good in this. Episode 2 set in Patrick’s childhood was just filled with crashing snobs and vacuous people, and as for poor little Patrick, well. This is supposed to be semi autobiographical I believe so the novelist (St Aubyn?) must have had a dreadful time. I’m tempted to abandon ship although apparently Harriet Walker is in episode 3 as a rancid Princess Margaret so might stay on for that.

Patrick Melrose.
Still one episode to go but after the horrific characters in episodes 1 and 2, and the endless effects of drugs scenes, I have found this to be very good indeed. Extremely well acted and beautifully set.
Mildred Pierce. This replaces PM next week, and was I believe very well received. It stars Kate Winslett.

I’ve been watching Mildred Pierce (a week behind now after the gymnastics!) and quite enjoying it. I cannot abide Joan Crawford so the film wasn’t for me really. But I gather the TV series is true to the book which the film wasn’t.
Next week they are starting Olive Kitteridge, a short series based on a novel by Elizabeth Stout and starring Frances McDormand. I like her, although the series and her character sound a bit miserable.

So just a direct swap with Pick (as was) then. Honestly what a faff for nothing. Well spotted though!

Yet another retune, then! Every couple of weeks, it seems, I have to retune because some rubbish channel has been added. It's possible to ignore it but the message to retune keeps popping up until I do. Sky Arts has some interesting programmes so I will have to do this but it's a pain.

Titanic: the Musical
Sounds as though it should be dreadful, doesn’t it but I have read several online reviews and they are generally favourable. The Guardian gave it 4 stars and apparently it won 5 Tony awards. So anyone fancying a musical over the Bank Holiday could tune in at 7.00 on Monday 26 August.
It isn’t a Kate and Leo style of show, more an episode of Upstairs Downstairs I reckon.
