I've just seen a trailer for a Channel 4 programme called Murder Island which is due to start soon, apparently. Couldn't see a thread for it here with any details about it, so thought I'd start one! 😀
According to Google, Ian Rankin is the writer behind the six-part series, and amateur detectives compete in teams of two. It's due to air sometime next month.
I was rather hooked on the BBC's 'The Murder Game (anyone else remember that? It aired in - goodness! - 2003), so I'm hoping this will be a worthy successor.

Was the Murder Game the one with Susan Calman? I enjoyed that!

No, you're thinking of 'Armchair Detectives', which was on at lunchtime about four years ago. I think there's a thread somewhere on here about it - several other people here enjoyed it, too, if I remember rightly. The Murder Game was BBC's murder mystery series on a Saturday evening where ten ordinary people competed to track down a fictional killer in a town filled with improvisational actors playing the suspects and witnesses. At the end of each episode, the two people who hadn't done as well as the others had to go to a location where only one of them would come back 'alive' - this part was very tense, and I think it was filmed in night vision where you saw only what the contestant could see as they investigated their surroundings, hoping they wouldn't fall prey to the killer. There was a £25k prize at stake. I believe the winner was a farmer who wasn't expected to last very long!

I heard Ian Rankin talk about this.
Apparently each team has an ex-detective to mentor them and there are actors embedded on the island who alongside the locals have been given cues and bits of plot but are able to improvise.
I will give it a go. I'm going to an Ian Rankin talk on Saturday he might mention it.

OK, Ian Rankin said it was great fun to do and an amazing lock down project.
He said the teams are quirky and should have the Goggleboxers going.
He doesn't know who is going to win because the last couple haven't finished filming yet, but that people get eliminated if they don't get enough evidence/clues as judged by a panel. He's not on the panel.
He said lots of the other crime writers are saying they'd like to do a plot too.
Anyway we'll have to wait and see.

Did anyone watch?
I found it engaging and I was shouting clues at the contestants. I forgot to say that Ian Rankin recommended that viewers use a notepad to collate their own evidence. It has not bee revealed whether anyone won the £50,000 prize for solving the crime.
Shall we do that?
Suspects List - I can only remember three names because obviously I didn't get my note pad out?!
Hamish - campaigner, ex-husband in denial of Jean, knew the victim well Jean - shop owner, knows a lot of gossip, split up from husband, believed she had a relationship with the victim Sonya - teacher, with a husband who owns the pub, a B&B and rented the house to the victim. She had a conversation with the victim, the phrase "What happened in Glasgow, stays in Glasgow"
Please add, I can't remember anymore names.

I haven't watched it yet. I'm debating whether to watch week by week or whether to record them all first and then binge-watch.
What are other people doing? (Apart from Beverley who's already started. 🙂)

Just watching the first one.
A few notes so far.
Victim (V) has obviously run away from family, poss including her son. Control freak mentioned in flashback could be partner. But there is sexual attraction between V and woman in shop. So maybe not partner, just 'sperm donor'.
Sonia in petrol station was not pleased to see V. And surprised to see her back looking like she did. Past history of conflict between them?
Judging from flashback from crime scene, the murderer (M) is slightly taller than V. Although that's not definite.
Was Hamish wearing trainers in the shop? Ah hang on! The trainers are more likely to be those of Alicia who found her body. And is the charming face of the corporate sharks.
The detectives are laying into the teams though! Proper telling off at the first briefing. LOL!
Ah, Sonia is a barmaid or landlady. Landlord is looking surprisingly edgy and upset.
Freddy the Money Man is too obviously threatening and dodgy. I expect better of Ian Rankin but we will see.

Ok so. Unsurprising twist at the end there. She obviously didn't leave her old life cos she was pregnant as she didn't know. And it can't be anyone on the island that is the father as it would have to be within the first couple of days. Hamish and Jean seem to have completely opposing ideas about the state of their marriage. So that could be the cause of the argument in the courtyard. But she was being very evasive under questioning. Guess at murderer - likely to be Alicia as the body-finder is often the murderer. Explains a lot of forensic traces. Or it could be a jealous attack by Jean. But I reserve the option to change my mind later!

OK Sonia said she was a teacher. She moved from Glasgow and married ? the pub owner. She knew V in Glasgow. Did she first come to the island for a trip with the V and meet the pub owner, otherwise it's a random place to pitch up and a big coincidence.
The only other person from Glasgow is the businessman. Did they know him? Has the V disrupted other plans of his with her protests.
Alicia got up and shut the door after him when he walked through the room. She is cagey around him. He claimed he hurt his hand picking up a broken wine glass. Could he have tried it on with her, is that just a red herring.
Hamish seems a very obvious suspect but he still could be.
In another scene the son of the woman being interviewed was seen being very shifty in the kitchen.
Jean could be in there, after all the V had kissed her. But we don't know that the V didn't explain that she just wanted some fun and was bisexual.
One thing that's bugging me is that the V told us she spent a lot of her childhood on the island, she also told Sonia she was back. Then she mentioned that running away wasn't always the right thing to do. So how come none of these people like Hamish and the pub owner have told the police that they know her and grew up knowing her. Who was her father? Where did she live? How could she afford that van and the rent on that big house. Who is she renting it from - the pub owner- if so why didn't he tell Sonia she was back.
She's been on the island 6 weeks and she is estimated to be 6 weeks pregnant. She took a test on the island, but Jean the shop owner who found the pregnancy test was surprised. We don't know if there's a pharmacy but she certainly didn't buy the pregnancy test in the shop. Who is the father?
I wonder if that's all the suspects or someone else turns up.
There's a lot of background we haven't found out yet.
They're not very good at the questions are they. Alicia told them nothing at all, she was so vague it was shocking and they didn't seem to pick up on it.
I mean someone is shouting at you in a meeting and you can't remember what they said and then despite that and the Vs opposition to everything you stand for, you decide to pop round and clear the air. It's not very likely is it. Why would they let you in and/or pour a glass of wine or make a cup of tea. What is there to sort out, you're diametrically opposed to each other - or are you.
Ha ha, this is fun.
