Now watched it and glad for Sarah and Richmond. If we get another series, I hope it's a different writer.

I think it's the format Miranda and perhaps we'll get used to that. Wk 1 - murder scene and those who reported death, Wk2 - witnesses that knew the victim, some forensics, WK3 - more forensics - diary etc.
All in all the superintendent at the end said they had been on the case a week and needed to get an arrest. So weeks for us but days for them. They were presumably getting evidence on the same day to day scale as normal it just felt like forever for viewers and of course they didn't have any back up. No PCs doing research in the background.
The thing that irritated me was that they didn't get to interview all of the witnesses and suspects, just one each episode, maybe two. Which can send you off on the wrong track completely. So you never got Sarah and Richmond interviewing everyone and going from there. Am I right, I might have confused myself?
Of course they might have asked Logan if he had an alibi but it wasn't until his DNA was on the window etc that people started to look his way. But right at the start when they spoke to Ishbel, Logan looked terrified in that kitchen and so shifty.
I think the idea was that it's a different writer each time but I don't even know if they'll do another one.

It's not that. I didn't mind the waiting to find out each week. It was the sudden appearance of a motive that no-one knew anything about until it appeared. What I call a 'Conan Doyle' cos he was notorious for not introducing the murderer until the reveal. Most of the fun of a whodunnit is working it out for yourself and, IMO, Ian Rankin cheated.

Yeah, it would've been good to be able to deduce the killer ourselves from all the relevant evidence, etc, that appeared in earlier episodes instead of having a motive appear in the penultimate episode.

Yes I get that the two remaining contestants weren't disadvantaged because they both got that evidence.
But up until then Logan was shifty and probably mixed up with the drugs on a low level. We knew he'd been at the manse but to suddenly drop in the dictaphone and have it in such an unlikely place was pants.
