Well for us Archers fans, this could be a Rob Titchener tribute week. “Custard from scratch, none of that shop bought rubbish, Helen”

Just a thought, but you must have to have some money to buy all the ingredients to practice all this stuff at home. Perhaps they could have a Cost of Living week.
I don't know how you qualify to get on the show, there must be interviews, you must have to prove you can cook at some point. This years are just not as good as others, I think. Perhaps they just upload videos of baked items?

It is out of step with the present times, isn't it?. I'm not saying everything should be grim and austere but that is an awful lot of food going to waste.

Perhaps they are given a practice allowance by C4. Austerity week! At least that should show us some basic cookery skills. Same for the Sewing Bee.

So how about a batch baking week. Making things that can be made relatively cheaply and frozen. Good heavens that would involve pastry and most of them are useless at that.
I'm thinking oven on for a maximum of one hour - make whatever you can out of a budget of £50 that will provide a family of four with a main dish (minus veggies etc) for 6 meals or something. Yes, it would be pies, and savoury rolls, possibly suet pastry (which costs buttons), filo pastry samosa type things, flatbreads for pizzas and things but it could still be fairy cakes and loaf cakes. It doesn't have to be mean looking.

I think that's a really good idea. Budget week. Let's face it, there are millions out there who would be terrified at the thought of batch cooking.

Oh poor Kevin. They’re all making their set custard gateau, and most are alternating a good layer with a sponge. Kevin is sloshing in pints of the stuff! Needless to say it didn’t set and just collapsed, but it was nice to see three others trying to help, not that they managed to salvage anything. I thought Sandro was unlucky not to get star baker.

I thought Sandro should have got star baker. His ice cream was the best and his show stopper was lovely.

We expect perfection…. We’ll they certainly didn’t get it, did they? Undercooked pastry all round. I was sure Abdul would be out this week but he had a bit of a rally. Poor Maxy had a nightmare. She was my tip for winner! Sandro is getting a bit too desperate for handshakes and victory now I think.

Sorry to see Maxi go but she did have a very poor week.
Shame that they all struggled with pastry - surely one of the basics in this series?

Sorry to see Maxi go but she did have a very poor week. Shame that they all struggled with pastry - surely one of the basics in this series? They always struggle with pastry, most of them buy it. Even a lot of TV cooks use frozen pastry. I was looking up recipes for French Apple Tart the other day and nearly all were suggesting that you could buy a ready made pastry case, some even said you could put apricot jam under the layered apples to stop you having to stew some! That's not cooking that's dressing a pie crust.

Usually excited, but not this time I don’t mind who wins as long as it isn’t as a result of a particularly ridiculous task Tbh, I won’t mind if I forget to watch at all I wonder if they’re taking note of the media criticisms of this series? It needs a change of format I think

The tabloids have not been so 'involved' this year - perhaps they could not find any dirt on any of those taking part? Or were unable to suggest that Paul was making eyes at one of the bakers?
I've enjoyed it as much as ever and was pleased with the winner.
