Yes it really is. I mean considering the population and the accessibility of sport and the fact that sports scholarships are not the norm, including the fact that if you're not doing GCSE Sports & Fitness etc. you won't be doing sport at school from age 13/14. Which effectively means you and your parents have to pay for it, it's surprising we do well at any Olympics.
I think we only have one or two Olympic standard skating rinks and no snow to speak of. Most of our free style and slope style entrants start out on skateboards and trampolines.
We do have a lot of marathon and long distance runners but there's no concerted effort to get them into cross country skiing. If there was we might do better in that too.
The toboggan competition things, was a wash out but then everyone agreed that as the Germans built the track and built their equipment to suit it, everyone else was pretty much knackered. Their investment was multiple millions.
So well done everyone, even making the qualifying standard is immense.

There was a ski centre not far from here which closed at the March 2020 lockdown and by May it had been announced that it would not re-open. It had been there for over 30 years and nearly 70 staff members were made redundant There just aren’t enough appropriate facilities in the UK for winter sports and not everyone can afford to travel to find what they need
