Channel 4’s four-part drama inspired by Operation Yewtree, will premiere on Tuesday September 20th at 9pm.
National Treasure follows Paul Finchley, a famous comedian, who, though not quite as successful as he once was, is still a familiar face in the TV schedules and regarded as a national treasure. His life is turned upside down one day when he is accused of a rape from the 1990s.
Cast includes:
Robbie Coltrane Julie Walters Andrea Riseborough

This may be very uncomfortable viewing but I reckon it will be good. Seems to have a stellar cast. It's ages since I have seen Robbie Coltrane in anything

That does sound very interesting. (Also I'll watch anything with Julie Walters.)

There has been amazing press coverage about this. It looks very promising.

I too love anything with either Robbie Coltrane or Julie Walters in so this is an absolute must-see for me. I have circled it in my Radio Times to make sure I don't forget!

It was awfully slow and far too much arty farty camerawork. Robbie Coltrane seems to have become really obese and I'm not sure the use of the cane was necessary or just part of his character. I'm not sure I can be bothered with the other three episodes, I just didn't find it absorbing enough in spite of it being very topical.

I think it needed to be slow. The progression from one claim to seven. There's a gradual escalation in the story that is fairly accurate I think.
I think that Robbie's physical condition is just fine for the part, his character is way past his prime, I think it fits right in with the historical claims storyline. People are often swayed by the physical state of the accused. Giving sympathy where, possibly, none is due.
I shall be interested to see how it develops.

According to this article from 6 September, he has lost a lot of weight recently, in preparation for knee surgery, and does in reality use a cane. I never saw the Harry Potter films but remember him from Cracker, where he was a lot bigger than he is now. Not using a cane though. I did notice he was walking very carefully last night and don't know if that was real too, or part of his characterisation. I suppose the main interest in this is not whether Finchley is guilty or not, but the impact on himself, his family, and alleged victims, regardless of the truth. I found the scene with his daughter very uncomfortable and there seems to be a suggestion of possible abuse within the home – again, that could be a real memory on Dee's part, or a false memory recall triggered by her treatment (harking back to the Orkney child abuse scandal perhaps). The family home was cold and sterile, especially the kitchen – suggesting the real family relationships, I suppose. And I was fascinated by Julie Walters' peculiar wandering accent – was she aiming for Scottish, as his wife, or Irish, I wonder? And why bother? No reason for her to be Scottish just because he is. At the moment I'm guessing that he will be proved innocent of the rape charges, but guilty of being a not very nice man under the cuddly veneer, and with his reputation trashed and his family life ruined. Three episodes to go, though, so more revelations to come no doubt.

I thought it was great!
I glad someone else thought Julie Walters' accent wandered between Irish and Scottish.

I couldn't help but relate much of the story to what has been happening to Cliff Richard - in particular the making of everything public so early in the proceedings.
I'm interested enough to watch the next episode, and will decide then if I'm interested enough to watch the next two.

I found it held my interest, even if I was not exactly gripped.
As you say, Goodhelenstar, the scene with the daughter was difficult to watch.

Well worth a watch but as it has been said Julie's accent is all over the place. Something is odd about that daughter though.
