Journalists are reporting that there aren't many English fans in Doha. Another said they are in Dubai at the holiday resorts there.
Can you get to Qatar and back to see the game in the same day? Match starts at 1pm our time-no idea what the time is out there.
I do think it's wrong to drag every footballer into the fray and expect them to give their opinion on the politics of the country. This the world Cup after all. Something they've probably dreamt of for years and they've only got to the quarter finals to show their skill 😃 😀 😄
It's for higher authorities to do that.

I was reading that a lot of female fans who had wanted to go felt that the prospect was too difficult for them to deal with; they don't want to go to a competition held in Qatar.
Piers Morgan says that the BBC were disrespectful in not showing the opening ceremony on BBC One.

FIFA would only respond to a message had it come a year ago with all the qualifying countries declining to attend if the event was held in Qatar. No teams, no tournament. I was thinking more about future tournaments. This one is already lost.

For once I agree with him. They are trying to have their cake and eat it. Clutching their pearls in horror at the rules within the host nation - but sending the usual squads of reporters to the country and saturating radio and TV with coverage.
Show the games - obviously - but make a stand on the opening ceremony!?!

Omid Djalili has asked that England players do the Haircut gesture every time they score as a show of support for Iranian women. It was started by an Iranian men's beach soccer team who recently won an International competition. As for the BBC, I think they would have got it in the neck from a lot of people whatever they did. TBH, the only way to really send a message to FIFA is for no one to watch it. But if the BBC had decided not to show it there would be even more upset. A mother whose daughter was killed in Qatar and had a torrid time trying to see justice done, with numerous visits for trials, reduced charges, derisory sentences, has asked the England team to form the letter L with their arms when they score in memory of Liane. I can’t see that happening either. Also, something has been bugging me. There was a shedload of criticism when a politician suggested gay fans should watch how they behave in public…. Yet it seems perfectly acceptable to tell the WAGS to dress modestly. Would that be because it’s OK to tell women what to do? Don’t get me wrong, I would always check and comply with local practice (and if that meant wearing a hijab I wouldn’t go) but why is it OK to point this out to one set of fans and not the other? Am I missing something?

The Opening Ceremony was shown live on iPlayer, online on the BBC website, and on the Red Button. The problem was that, in August, the organisers of the tournament, changed the day of the start of the tournament by one day. The BBC were already contractually required to show the WSL game.

Did they make it clear that it was available on the red button George? I appreciate the commitment to the WSL game but having switched on the Beeb at 3 I expected to see the ceremony - or at least be directed to where it was available.

I’ve just googled and it’s a 1hr 10min flight or 6 hour drive, cheap flights cost £126. I can’t imagine there will be any cheap flights available for this period though. I would imagine everyone would stay in Dubai and watch on TV but then you might as well stay at home and save your money. Well I’ve just googled further and Dubai (if you can stomach the regime) seems pretty well set up with fan zones and sports bars. You face arrest if you are drunk in public there but if you just have a few drinks the facilities on offer looked quite nice to me. At The Blacksmith they are offering unlimited pints during matches for what I think is £45 (Dhs199). Another terrace venue has 3m x 4m LED screens! I would imagine this would all be eminently preferable to the conditions shown in Qatar but I don’t know how expensive it is in comparison. Those awful tin hut things in Qatar are c£200 a day aren’t they? And they have nothing so you would have to eat out all the time. I seem to have gone into travel agent mode, 😂😂😂

Dubai has set itself up as a holiday destination where within your hotel compound you can eat, drink and dress as you like. They run shuttle buses to air-conditioned shopping centres where guests are advised to dress modestly - but you wouldn't go into the shopping centre in your bikini, would you. There are lots of people at work who have gone to Dubai for long weekends and holidays or had stopovers for long haul flights there.
Qatar is not the same at all.
Do the Saudis like the Qataris - a question on a different aspect. The Saudis have executed about 80 people in the last month with 10 people being beheaded last week. I'm only being cynical and wondering if they don't mind the headlines flagging up the difference in our cultures. Which they must have known would have been big news right now. Has to be said that nearly everyone executed in Saudi is a foreigenor. Is this just sending a message to the west that we won't change our culture to suit you. It marks a change for Saudi which had said nobody would be executed for non-violent crimes. Just pondering on whether they thought this news would get lost amidst the clamour for gay rights in Qatar.

Glad Iran got a couple of goals, even if the penalty was suspect.
Probs for England fans gaining access to the ground, but with the concussion to the Iranian goalie, they did not miss much.
Just hope none of them go on a bender now...

I thought they must have lost… when I walked past O’Neill’s in town, the centre for the big-screen watching, there was a large security presence and two or three police cars. Not entirely sure the racket from inside the pub was good-natured…

Has the BBC said anything about viewing figures yet? A peak audience of 8 million viewers tuned in for the opening game of the World Cup.
