Gosh - exciting game between Japan and Spain!
Apparently, we could see Germany going out before the knockout rounds.
(This, of course, will cause the tabloids to assure us that England will be in the final.)

South Korea beat Uruguay! Time for the pundits to give these lesser known teams (in footie terms) full credit for their skills. They may be relative new comers to the sport but they will invest in top coaches and develop gifted kids to play for their country.

Sorry, that SHOULD read S. Korea beat PORTUGAL.
But the result knocked out Uruguay.

Arsene Wenger has suggested countries that protested at the World Cup saw their on-field performances suffer.
Germany players covered their mouths before their opening defeat against Japan after Fifa threatened "unlimited" sanctions against players who wore the anti-discrimination OneLove armband.
"The teams [who performed well] were mentally ready," Wenger said. "They had the mindset to focus on the competition and not on political demonstrations."
Germany's football federation was the most vocal in pressing for the OneLove armbands to be worn by players and said "extreme blackmail" led to Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands, Wales, England and Switzerland abandoning plans to wear them. Fifa had threatened "unlimited" sanctions against players who wore the OneLove armband during matches.

I think that's a lame excuse, Germany just weren't that good. Neither were Belgium. I don't know why they thought they'd get away with it anyway. These sporting competitions are often in unsavoury places, I've never seen any of them go to the US and protest about capital punishment or penal servitude.
You're either in or you're out and the FA could opt out and just do a European tournament every year.
On we go, it's the knock outs now, so a bit skill and a bit of luck and you never know. Let's see how far we can go.

Great game by England! I am a fan of Southgate and his squad.
Sadly the media will now be totally OTT - and they have France to beat in the next round.
But it was a good performance.
The hype should be saved for the final, if they get there.

Yes, and I always remember Southgate doing his best to remind people that in world terms getting to the Quarter Finals is a good tournament, keeps us up the rankings and doesn't embarrass anyone, develops the squad and allows new players to be introduced.
Whereas teams that have gone out like Belgium and Germany get caught up in the bad press at home and it can knock you back completely. Rebuilding for the next competition is quite hard, just look at Italy.

Sorry to see Japan go. Maybe next time...
They really need to practice penalties.

Very well, is the answer. Ronaldo on the bench for most of it whilst a 21 year old scored a hat trick.
There are always new talents coming along.

Oh dear - bye bye Brazil!
I still think penalties is a rotten way to decide a match. Surely they could reschedule it at this stage in the tournament when there are gaps in the schedule?
Ready to cheer on The Netherlands - for the sake of my SIL.
