Scotland did it in 1974 in the then West Germany.
In 1982, England and Cameroon were undefeated, but did not win.
In 1986, Mexico and Brazil were only beaten in penalty shootouts.
In 1990, Italy were only beaten in a penalty shootout.
In 1998, Italy (only beaten in a penalty shootout) and Belgium.
In 2002, Spain and Ireland were only beaten in penalty shootouts.
In 2006, Germany, England, Argentina, France, and Switzerland were only beaten in penalty shootouts.
In 2010, New Zealand were the only unbeaten team in the competition.
In 2014, Netherlands and Costa Rica were only beaten in penalty shootouts.
In 2018, Denmark and Spain were only beaten in penalty shootouts.

Why are we getting the celebrations in Argentina as headline news in most bulletins? They won, hurray for them, but do we need to see their arrival home, the open-bus parade, etc etc
It should come a lot further down the list of news items, if at all
