It was! Not at all the ending I was expecting but very satisfying.

Clever. The big confrontation was verbal rather than physical.
Tommy overpowering and killing HIS would be killers was a triumph of stunt fighting.
I did cheer every time his abductor injured him - meaning Tommy would be less likely to be able to harm Catherine.
I would like to have seen the gym teacher being charged. The pharmacist opening the door to the police.
And Darius arrested.
But all in all a satisfying, and non-sensational, conclusion to a wonderful series.
Well done to all involved.

Totally agree, so well done, not at all what anyone thought the ending would be like, much better Not sure holding my breath so much has done me any good! Only a few questions…. what about the Himalayas? Was she really going? Will Ryan pass those GCSEs??

That last text message was a perfect end too.
Brilliant writing and acting. I think James Norton deserves awards but mostly Sarah Lancashire who is the best in the business.

"I think I might have singed one of your crochet blankets" made me laugh while I was still crying! And "there's a grandmother" started me off crying again. Sally Wainwright is a magnificent writer.

Someone on Twitter said that Sally Wainwright and Sara Lancashire are drama's version of Wood and Walters. I agree.

Well, that was just the perfect ending in so many ways. And it was nice to see Catherine togged up in everyday clothes at the very end, rather than her usual Robocop attire (her words, not mine 😉)

A very good ending in that it was so unexpected, by me at least. James Norton has such a mobile face you can see all his emotions, no words needed. They were lucky to get him before his star really took off imho, and now he is such a glamorous actor it is a great against-type role for him. The one problem I had is my almost phobia of self-immolation scenes! I think I just get so worried about the stunt going wrong, I mean it must be awful to play. So I did miss a little bit as I was behind a cushion.
Brilliant acting by Sarah Lancashire throughout of course but great support from all the cast.

It's quite an achievement for Tommy to elicit any sympathy at all - I was totting up his body count and I think it's three in the first series, none in the second as he was in prison though he tried to groom Miss Whelan into killing Catherine, and three this series. That's on top of Gary Gaggoski whom he did not kill but did help dispose of the body, trying to kick Catherine and burn his own son to death in series 1, and whatever else's he's done that we don't know about. That's a helluva lot!
And yet he did ... heartbreaking as well as breathtaking final scene with Catherine, as others have said. Apparently James Norton is in the running to play Bond, according to the Twitterati at any rate. I rather hope he doesn't as we'd lose him to wonderful character roles like this for the next few years. There's a YouTube clip of him and Siobhan Finneran with one or two of the technical team where he says it's exciting to play a nasty piece of work that everyone is scared of, 'because no-one's scared of me'!

I almost felt sorry for him. But then Catherine reminded me of what he was and not so much. But this was the first episode where I've watched him with full attention. Which shows how good it was! I've given up reading about it on Twitter as I'm getting a similar feeling to the one I got at the end of LoD. Exasperation with people making stupid comments cos they didn't get it and it's all the programme's fault!

So clever of Sally Wainwright to make it a comparatively low key ending but to still give us the right outcome. Low key, that is as far as the face-off between Catherine and Tommy was concerned, not at all when it came to the fights in the car and then the field! I had to look away for most of that section and again when Tommy set fire to himself. I was transfixed with horror too when Tommy's face appeared at the window over the top of the chair Catherine was sleeping in! I'm so pleased Catherine and Claire were reconciled ("I think I have singed one of your crochet blankets". Lol!). I am going to miss Happy Valley and all its inhabitants so much.
Edit to say: Against my better judgement I did end up feeling sorry for Tommy. I never thought that would happen with one of the most villainous and frightening characters ever to appear in a television drama and I think the fact that it happened is a tribute to James Norton's incredible acting skills.

Yep. A tremendously villainous acting performance by Mr Norton. A nasty character obviously but couldn't help being touched by his emotional reaction to that photo album he was looking through.
