Wasn’t it wonderful? Kevin as a person didn’t disappoint, he even chatted to the boatman. I was hoping for a finale with some indigenous cousins but even without it was a very warm and moving episode.

I am part of an online genealogy community as it has been a huge hobby of mine for many years. All the talk by members today is about what a wonderful programme this was. No-one has anything critical to say about it.

Genealogy is one of my big interests too. I found this episode very interesting, more so than some others in the series have been. Seems that Canadian records are very good, they were able to find an amazing amount of information for him. There is very often truth in family legends, sometimes needs a bit of untangling though!

There is a lot of information online about Nancy under her various names of McKenzie, McTavish and Matooski plus quite a bit about the rest of her family and the practice of having country wives. It's fascinating.

I wondered when they said Grace ran off to San Francisco with her young boyfriend and he stole her money, then they thought she went to British Columbia, whether she didn't just go back to her sisters. Just because that's where her mother was when she died and she left everything to her 3 daughters. So Grace had two living sisters.
Might have got the name wrong. Grace was the one who came to England - Tottenham wasn't it, not the one who was divorced. Even that was a story that wasn't explained. Why did she come to Tottenham?

I got a bit confused with the two Graces.

I wasn't sure who the two men were on last night's programme. Presumably on TV I don't watch. It was interesting but I didn't buy the idea that they had never taken any notice of a house full of Dutch artefacts and documents.
It couldn't have been a surprise that once the name Demerara was used that it was going to involve slavery. It was one of the most notorious places for cruelty. It was good how they handled it, after all it is not their fault. However, once we got to the Java bit and coffee plantations, the slavery and indentured forced labour of the Dutch plantations wasn't mentioned at all. Their entire backgrounds from the 1700s onwards was just full of merchants making money from slaves and plantations.

Hmm.. I think I'll skip that one as well. I'm not doing well with this series.

Xand and Chris are great in my opinion. Xand is on Morning Live and comes over very well,. Chris isn't on TV so much but they often do documentaries together. I am looking forward to this.

They are really nice guys who come across well, however there is a lot of Dutch military history in this one.

....... however there is a lot of Dutch military history in this one. Which I found boring so I fell asleep and missed most of the programme! How could you have grown up in a house with all those family portraits and framed documents on the walls and not know anything about them? The family has to be proud of their history to have such things on display so surely they talked about it all occasionally?

I found it interesting. The twins were upset about the slavery aspect which is not surprising. The paintings of the Indonesian couple were good to see.

I really enjoyed this one, they came across very well. I have barely seen them in anything but Xand did a C5 documentary on King Canute last week which I enjoyed very much and which made me realise I had completely the wrong impression of Canute.
I felt for them in the slavery aspects, you would absolutely dread that coming up wouldn’t you? But the story was interesting especially the Indonesian side of things. So funny when they revealed they lived in “a museum” and had paid absolutely no attention whatsoever to the framed paintings and documents on the walls.

My issue was that the Javanese side was presented as the good alternative to the Demerara side. It wasn't, where did they think the people on the plantations came from - the Job Centre!

Yes you’re right, they did gloss over that.
