I agree with Mike - the book should definitely be required reading before seeing the film.

Had recorded previously, and now watched this last weekend "Silver Linings Playbook"
Wasn't sure what to expect, as it was so highly praised and fussed over when it came out. The main message seemed to be, Don't sneer at those who have any mental problems, as if you look at society at large, it's hard to find what might be described as "normal" amongst us. The father in this, played ably by Robert de Niro, was a well drawn character and the supporting cast did a good job. Loved Jennifer Lawrence and her clever portrayal.
Hated the ending, which was corny in the extreme!

I've finally seen Frozen. I'm not sure 'disappointed' is quite the right word, as I didn't have great expectations to begin with, but while entertaining enough, it certainly doesn't live up to the hype. No particularly noteworthy characters, and only one memorable song (and even then one has to question how memorable it would be if it hadn't been endlessly repeated everywhere around the time the film came out). Definitely not classic Disney.

Well ... you're not really the target market. They absolutely loved it.

" Lincoln" last night on Film 4. It just didn't grab me. I gave up after 40 minutes.

Going back a fair while, but I wasn't over-impressed with 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' - didn't live up to all the hype!

LaLaLand OK, passed the time on a wet afternoon, but 'life-changing' and all the other grand claims? No.

I didn't like La La Land much either. Yesterday I watched the new version of The Beguiled. I saw the Clint Eastwood, very steamy, version when it came out and I like Sofia Coppola's films so thought this would be terrific. Well. She has taken out all the steaminess and encounters which might not suit modern sensibilities and the female slave character as well. I thought it was a thundering bore! And the lighting is so dark, especially in the candlelit evening scenes, at some points I couldn't even see who was speaking! On IMDB one of the user reviews says "I thought I was going blind" and you can understand why. I must log into Cinema Paradiso and award it one star!

Watched "The Post" last night, and I have to say it's not really worth the entrance fee. The acting is excellent, the period details are good, but there's no real tension. You know where it's going. It's also a bit, what's the word, sappy and patriotic. Braggy. You know the type of thing: a free press is what makes America great, we hold our leaders to account blah blah blah (with uplifting music). Yeah, the President's a crook, the 10 year unwinnable war has cost hundreds of thousands of lives, institutional racism etc, but hey, no-one tells Tom Hanks what he can print dammit..... On the plus side it's quite timely, with Nixon comes across as quite Trumpian. Still it's nowhere near as good as Spotlight. Overall 3/5 But kermode liked it more than me

Just shows how different we all are I really liked it (even tolerated Meryl Streep!) I didn't see it as just American, I got quite emotional about the whole idea of press freedom... Have been persuading all my friends to go, but warning them it is very wordy..

I found The English Patient really dull. Just did not get it at all. Same with Lost in Translation.

Lost in Translation was the most boring film I’ve ever watched. In fact I didn’t finish watching it, nothing happened it just seemed like an excuse to show the female in various poses and states of undress. Absolute rubbish.

The Name of the Rose – a likeable enough film in its own right but for anyone who has read the book it isn't a patch and Sean Connery was miscast.

I like it, but then I saw it before reading the book so I didn't have any preconceptions. Unlike the book, though, they changed history, as the Inquisitor in the story was a real person... {Spoiler}...and didn't die like that!
