There didn't seem to be any motive for him to try and kill the stationmaster wife, the cases were entirely different and he wasn't even a suspect for the first murder or are we supposed to believe that it was because the station master was rude to him. It was loose end tied up badly for me. I think you may be right, Beverley, the motive for the attack was disrespect shown by the stationmaster. I have to say, one thing I struggle with every week is the way Morse receives a phone call and the very next scene shows him arriving at the crime scene in time to chase the culprit - as at the stationmaster’s house. I know it’s good drama, but my brain is always whingeing in the background. BTW, I am a Very Bad Person. I laughed as the trainspotter ran onto the crossing and started reeling off which train was coming because I predicted that very outcome as soon as I saw the track.

And then appeared to be vapourised by the train! No body, no squidgy mess.

There would be a little further down the line.

It was a lazy and obvious end to the story, now if it had been the boys mother (the one who gave the girl the piano lessons - we didn't see her, she was just talked about) who killed the original girl. Let's say because she caught her son having sex with her and she was either nutty and didn't want her son to leave home and had made him the unusual person that he was, or worried that he had raped the girl and would be sent to prison. Or as in a case that I know of (real case), the mother was making the son have sex with her and was jealous of the friendly way the girl spoke to her son on her way to school or something. That would have been unexpected and we could have had a flash back to a scene from years before when the Station Master's Wife had seen something or got friendly with the son at the station and become a little too concerned when he talked about his mother hitting him or similar, hence the motive for the attack on her. Still could have all been done in a scene or two and still with minimum acting fees for the mother. I sometimes wonder if the budget is why they have to keep to a minimum number of speaking roles and whether that some times loose ends are left a bit too loose.

I have thought a number of episodes have been resolved a little too swiftly. I think it may be in the editing – I'm sure they film more than they use and scenes may be cut that would explain things more. But you're right about budgets and non-speaking roles, which you might think would be factored in when writing and script editing.

A good episode, and nice to see a different twist on the hackneyed 'Army cover-up' plot. I guessed who early on, but not why. Even so, oddly enough I didn't make the antique militaria connection until I saw the Luger P08 pistol, which fired a 9mm round.
I also guessed what would happen to him. That's two dead murderers in a row - I suppose it's one way of avoiding prison overcrowding!

I enjoyed this week's episode too. Morse is becoming quite a lad with all these girls! Perhaps that is what has made him cynical in his later years. I love it when he smiles!
I cannot get your spoiler to work!

Oh, it's not just me, then! Hmm.. I'll try again... Even so, oddly enough I didn't make the antique militaria connection until I saw the Luger P08 pistol, which fired a 9mm round.
I also guessed what would happen to him. That's two dead murderers in a row - I suppose it's one way of avoiding prison overcrowding! EDIT: No luck! Well, that's one way of stopping spoilers... Mod note: Spoiler now fixed in both posts.

Good story tonight. No mentions of the gangs of Oxford this week. I wonder if we're heading towards a series finale in a couple of weeks that may be gang-based?

I imagine so. It seems like they've been building up to it.
What with talk of the future and hints at retirement and making peace with his son, I hope Fred's going to be okay...

Sounds like there's scope for a spin-off series there: Thursday recalls his early years in the force!

Who would you have play young Fred Thursday? Obviously someone who can dance as he seems to be good at that!

If you count Sherlock Holmes, yes.
