Yes, Jakes was the happy-go-lucky DS who preceded Strange, who was a uniformed constable back at the start. He turned out to be one of the boys abused at Blenheim Vale and left the police to start a new life in America. There's a very good summary of the Blenheim Vale scandal here: www.denofgeek.com/tv/endeavour-blenheim-vale-abuse-scandal-landesman-construction-police-corruption/There are also excellent weekly reviews on the same site. I was also struggling to remember it all though I do remember Fred being shot and Morse being arrested. If nothing else it's a reminder of what Morse has been through so far in his career – now if he has to witness Joan marrying Strange, the man we know will become his boss, is it any wonder he becomes even more introverted than he already is? I have a feeling the wedding won't take place though, as I'm sure there are references in the Morse episodes to Mrs Strange as being a Women's Institute stalwart, which isn't where I see Joan going. There's a theory doing the rounds that Fred will end up in Witness Protection, which would remove the whole family and explain why he is never mentioned by older Morse or anyone else working in the same station. There is definitely an air of tying up ends in this series, which means having a really good memory, or a really good review!

It has to be something that would mean nobody ever mentions him again. Not that it matters really because he is a fictional character and never was in the original Morse. Blenheim Vale was the place the powers that be said shouldn't be investigated further and covered up the sex abuse scandal. Mainly because everyone was dead or in a psychiatric hospital at the end of the series.
I wonder if it is Jakes who's come back to finish the job.

Den of Geek is good like this. It has helped me a lot with things that I forgot, or misremembered from before, and saved me having to go back and watch again. I thought that Mrs Strange in Morse was a Valerie.

Mrs Lewis was Valerie, if I remember rightly.

I think it's the importance of the Blenheim Vale story that is making me bored as I don't remember much about it and I don't have the time or the inclination to go back and refresh my memory. I also have to confess that I find Shaun Evans very hard to hear at times. He doesn't speak very clearly: at first I thought it was a fault with the sound but everyone else in the cast comes across OK, it's just him. Funny, I don't remember noticing that in previous series.

I permanently watch drama series with subtitles now! It’s not just endeavour, it’s most of them

It is noticeable how much clearer the sound quality is on any programme pre-1990.

The Den of Geek article is great. It didn't help me in that I dropped off a couple of times during the programme.

I really enjoyed the latest episode, Uniform. But then I liked the references to A Clockwork Orange and spotting in other episodes when and how they include something linked to Colin Dexter. Anton Lesser giving approval to the dig for bodies was also a nicely constructed scene.
Will be intrigued to see how the final episode resolves the various threads that have been developed over the entire series. And I also look forward to seeing how Roger Allam steals every scene he is in.

Just finished watching this latest episode and am very grateful to you, Helen, for that link to Den of Geek. As it actually identifies the episode where Blenheim House story is exposed, I may well just go back and watch it. Maybe even the whole series!

I feel a need to watch every episode again. I love this programme. I thought the other day, I need to watch this as a binged box set so I remember, or at least stand half a chance of remembering, all the links back to the earlier series. Yes, thanks also from me, Helen, for the link to that very useful article.

I watched the Blenheim Vale episode last night. It reminded me how much Bright has changed in recent series, from regarding Morse as a cheeky upstart with weird lines of investigation, to respecting and valuing him as he now does. Of course, Morse was usually right! The earlier series also showed more of Morse the classical music lover and choral singer. In order to do that they had to film in the college chapels – I wonder if something has changed there, or perhaps the writers thought they'd emphasised that side of his character enough.
Also, Thursday in earlier series was not averse to getting physical with his suspects and no longer does so – combination of the character being older, influenced by Morse, and changing tastes among TV audiences, I suppose.
I will greatly miss it! But they do regularly repeat the episodes on Drama and they are available on ITVX. Just no new ones.
