I'm looking forward to this crime drama starring Laura Fraser, Siobhan Finneran and John Sessions. Featuring beautiful Loch Ness scenery, it's "another Broadchurch for ITV, but this time set in Scotland" says the RT. It will start at 9.00 pm on Sunday 11 Jun (i.e. clashing with Poldark): www.tvwise.co.uk/2017/05/itv-sets-premiere-date-loch/

Looking forward to this...No problem for me as I don't watch Poldark.

Hmm, so it will clash with both Poldark and The Handmaid's Tale. One for ITV+1, methinks. And I do hope they rustle up some Scottish actors who actually are Scottish. John Sessions and Laura Fraser both are, not sure about the rest of the cast.

My expectations of this have gone down slightly - RT describes it as "decidedly odd" with "many curious features".

Didn't like the decidedly shouty trailer. It completely put me off.

Haven't seen the trailer yet. Alison Graham of RT describes this as 'Hamish Macbeth Meets Hinterland Stopping at Broadchurch'. Oh, dear. I loved those three but don't fancy a mashup of them. Well, it can't be any worse than Paula!

At least the cast looks reasonable, which is partly why I first noticed it. Siobhan Finneran is generally good, Laura Fraser isn't bad and John Sessions is an accomplished old hand. Also in it (episode 1 at least) are Alastair Mackenzie (Archie in Monarch of the Glen), and Simone Lahbib who made an impression in the only thing I know her from - a Downton Abbey Christmas special.

Simone Lahbib was in Monarch of the Glen as well, as a woman who inherited a wreck of a farm and tried to make a go of it while becoming Paul's love interest for a while (Paul replaced Archie). She was written out because she was pregnant but I don't remember the reason for her character's departure. She had a former business partner who turned up, trying to persuade her back into business, perhaps that was it.

I've taped it, hopefully like some things it's better than it's trailer.

I thought it got off to a promising start and will tune in next week. Nice to see Siobhan Finneran playing a figure of authority for a change.
Interesting to see John Heffernan as the homophobic doctor. I last saw him as Long Susan's creepy lawyer in Ripper Street, and as Jaggers in Dickensian. He seems to specialise in playing rotters – I wonder if that's through choice? Actors often say baddies are more interesting.
I imagine he is not the murderer in The Loch – I can't see him weighing someone down with a curling stone and chucking him in the loch, though he could have turfed him over the side of a boat I suppose. Are we meant to think the dead man is at the bottom of the Loch? This is Loch Ness, the deepest loch in the UK, so if he is there then he won't be found. He could be near the shore but if you're going to dispose of someone that way you would do it in the middle, surely?

A curling stone? Those things are bloody expensive! He couldn't just use a rock from the shore?

I thought it was a pretty good start too. Dubbing it MacBroadchurch, as some did, is a bit unfair (although we saw some blue twine!) - there was no serial killer in Broadchurch and experts weren't parachuted in to solve cases, though I suppose the small community aspect is similar. Also there's nothing particularly odd yet apart from the killer's actions - though Kieran's comatose brother suddenly opening his eyes was a bit supernatural. As is often the case with an opening episode, I was struggling to take in who all the characters are. I found this which is quite helpful: metro.co.uk/2017/06/11/what-is-new-itv-crime-drama-the-loch-about-and-when-is-it-on-6695841/

Yes, that's a good checklist. I didn't think the body in the loch had been found though – it was still submerged at the end of the episode, wasn't it?
I think the curling stone is meant to be symbolic – curling is popular in the north and they were curling at the start of the episode. Either that or it was handy!

I watched it and thought it was rather different, I'll carry on and see how it goes.
