I think it was the producer who said it. Perhaps it was just a joke! We'll see.

That’s like trying to change the Doctor Who theme. Simply not on!

Mmm. They do change the arrangement of the Dr Who theme, though not the main melody, every time there's a new doctor. I haven't heard any that are a patch on the original, though whether a youngster coming to the good doctor for the first time would think so I can't say.
I don't remember Van der Valk at all. I've yet to see a remake that is as good as the original so wouldn't be holding my breath!

This begins tomorrow (26th). 3 two hour stories have been filmed.
I am looking forward to it.

I shall watch it but I don't really see why they bothered to remake Van Der Valk. I mean a lot of people won't remember it. What people will remember of course is the theme tune which they have changed. But why not just create a brand new detective show based in Amsterdam? I would have watched that just as happily.
(For something new they could have dramatised the Amsterdam crime novels of Anja de Jager.)

I'm not sure what it says about the original, that people mostly seem to be remembering the theme tune more than the show itself? Anyway, I never watched any of it, so I shall try this remake out of curiosity, unfettered by pre-conception (well, except that I'm not a particular fan of Marc Warren, so my expectations are low).

I've only seen one trailer, but I think his portrayal of the character will be very different from the old version

The appeal for many viewers will be the scenery of Amsterdam. In the same way that Morse/Lewis gave us Oxford and Midsommer scythed its way through picture perfect villages. Add a half decent plot and you have a winner, imo.
Using the character name from the 70s is probably a lure for older viewers.

I've only seen one trailer, but I think his portrayal of the character will be very different from the old version I haven't even seen One! I only know it starts tomorrow because of this thread and an article in The TV mag. Advertising for this by ITV is pitiful when you compare it to Quiz where there seemed to be an advert in every break. I'll give it a try. They did a reboot of VDV in the late 80s/90s didn't they? I remember seeing it on TV with Barry Foster but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the 70s. I don't mind Marc Warren, I used to really enjoy Hustle with him and Adrian Lester so we'll see.

Van der Valk was a huge favourite of OH's and mine in the 70s, both the stories AND the theme tune. I'm not great at remembering tunes from years ago but I do remember this one. I am SO looking forward to this tonight...hope it won't be too much of a disappointment!

Wow - how good was that?
Solid plot, good characters and stunning scenery.
Some LOL moments - "someone wearing rubber. In Amsterdam..."
to a colleague who is eating "you got those from my desk? They're dog snacks"
and best of all Trojan, the Wonder Dog!!! Retired to a luxury basket in the office of the head of police, he is none the less ready for duty.
Marc Warren is one of those men who is handsome - but who will be even more so as he ages. His blond/blue eyed looks mean he can easily pass for a typical Dutch citizen. And he has not dated for some time. Divorced? Widower? We are not told.
Looking forward to next weeks story.

I enjoyed it. It makes a change from the costume dramas. I don't watch Killing Eve on BBC so this was perfect to relax to on a Sunday evening - even without the heating on. (It gets chilly for us oldies in the evenings!)

I enjoyed it. I hope Trojan always features rather than just sitting in his basket. I thought VDV was supposed to live on a houseboat but that looked far bigger than the type of thing you usually see on a canal!!! More like the Cutty Sark!
Also, how on earth could Eva afford a house (the party was over several floors it looked to me) on a prime canal frontage when her two jobs were as a barmaid and a gallery assistant?
I liked it when Job had assumed they were meeting again in the coffee shop and had pinned up all the crime information round the place. I also hope we get more scenes in the museum.
(Unlike Pearl I watched with the heating on!)

It was ok, is it dubbed, everyone seemed to very precisely say their words. I'm just wondering if it is also available in Dutch for Dutch viewers.

Quite acceptable. Another good Sunday nighter for ITV to add to their roster. Not too much time spent on the private lives of the police characters, so it's nice to see a police show where most of the narrative is about the story of the week! Plus there was the odd moment of humour. I had 2 problemettes: 1) Marc Warren increasingly reminds me of Gordon Ramsey. 2) That short scene of him watching the boat going down the waterway after each ad break looked like it should have had a sponsor's voiceover for Amsterdam river cruises.
