I think the pattern challenges are far too hard this year. In previous years, a rucksack would have been a semi final task.

I definitely think it's way too hard this year. It's only the second week and not one of them made a decent piece without mistakes.

I definitely think it's way too hard this year. It's only the second week and not one of them made a decent piece without mistakes. I just don't think many of them are particularly good sewers; there have been so many elementary mistakes like getting the rucksack straps the wrong way round or putting a hot iron on the swimsuits, given the material they were using. Last week someone got a sleeve in back to front. The finishing is awful in lots of cases too. Surely there must be better sewers than this up and down the country? The right one went out last night. I don't think that person has had a clue what was required in either episode.

No, they didn’t, and it was sad to watch

No, they didn’t, and it was sad to watch I agree and it makes me wonder if they were included in order to fail. I'm beginning to feel that what started as a lovely gentle programme showcasing really excellent amateur sewers is now becoming just another talent show with an element of cruelty built in. If so it's unforgivable.

I haven’t watched it yet but…. What amateur sewer would make a rucksack, for goodness sake? Or a swimsuit come to that! And that’s before we even talk about the stupid transformation challenges. I don’t know about the introduction of an element of cruelty, but to my mind they need to get in touch with reality and good sewing skills.

The transformation challenges are in there to show creativity and imagination. They were told to use the structural element of the fabric and not just make a rain mac.
There must be challenges set before they are selected so that a level of expertise is demonstrated.
A rucksack is much harder to make than it seems and that's why it was so difficult for them in the time.
I think that the lady who went, knew what was being asked of her and chose not to comply. Like when Patrick told her the fabric wasn't strong enough for a rucksack and she ignored him and they were asked to make a costume with detailing and she decided a bit of bias binding around the top would do it - she knew it wouldn't. People who have children that dance or do gymnastics make leotards and costumes, there are plenty of patterns. Most of them made a pretty good job of it and would have done something wonderful if the time was longer - but that's the test.

I agree with Bev. It's not that the tasks are hard to do in themselves. Just impossible in the time limit. There are amateur sewers that make bags and swimsuits. In fact GBSB has an FB group that runs all year round and many members show off what they make. Some of it is gorgeous and technically difficult. They just don't have to do it in four hours.
I'm not sure there's cruelty exactly, but they really are pushing the boundaries of what can be done and that's causing a lot of stress. Which isn't what people watch Sewing Bee for, IMO.

No I agree, we don't want to see people pressurised to the point of crying.
Perhaps they could say this is the pattern challenge and you will be marked on each stage you complete. Even telling them that they could miss the lining out but it must be able to fold at the top.
I think when it comes to the judging they do consider those things.
Mind you why that man put in bust darts nowhere near the bust is strange. However he may not have wanted to intimately touch his model and I get that. Changing it to a halter neck would have solved his problem.

As soon as I read the comments that the woman didn’t seem to have a clue and ignored Patrick’s fabric advice, I knew exactly who was meant!😂 I’ve just started and yes, I was right. She also was the one who missed the point of the cut out dress iirc. She reminded me of Sister Boniface!!
I’m obviously behind the times when it comes to what people sew! I’m afraid I would never be arsed to make something like this rucksack!
Im never a fan of fake time limits which mean the finished result is crap, vide The Apprentice, GBBO.

I did say WTF when he said he was going to put darts in. The whole point of stretch is that you don't have to.

He did say he was expecting her to wear a bra
Then we hear that Gillie had a last minute change of model. This meant her measurements from the previous week were all wrong and she had to start from scratch on the day, whereas the others had the same models and were able to cut out in advance.
Of course she was a gonna once she ignored Patrick's advice!!
That's TV folks.

Haven't seen or heard that about Gillie and her model. A bit unfair, although, as has been said, she had misunderstood or maybe ignored the cut-out dress brief last week and really shouldn't have needed Patrick's advice on which materials would be best for the lining and outer layer for the rucksack.
So far my favourite contestants are Aasma, Lauren and Mia.
